Daniel B. Wallace (PhD, Dallas Theological Seminary) is professor of New Testament at Dallas Theological Seminary. He is a noted textual critic, serving as head of the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts, and is author of Greek Grammar beyond the Basics, Basics of New Testament Syntax, and (with Grant Edwards) of A Workbook for New Testament Syntax.

Excellent book!

Excellent book! I first heard of this book when I was listening to Bill Mounce "Greek for the Rest of Us" online. He raved about it so I thought I'd check it our as I found a new copy for $12 (including shipping) on Amazon. It's normally $33. This guy has done so much study on the grammar of the Greek. Going through it has really helped understand what Greek really means. I certainly don't understand it all, but it has already helped me to understand the Word of God in a deeper way. It will be a reference book I'll turn to the rest of my life. I did graduate from seminary in 1974 after taking 2 years of Greek. Since then I've learned to use a laptop and click on words in Wordsearch to parse Greek words--a lot better than what I learned in seminary!

Not as good as I remember

I used this a number of years ago and found it an excellent reference, but now what jumps out at me are all the instances of criticizing other grammars and other negative comments that come from nowhere (against denominations not his own, for example), very very often punctuated with exclamation points. (The effect is somewhat unprofessional!) The book is still good for categorizing various usages and, although not perfect (claiming, for example, that a given usage is the 'only' example in the NT [e.g., anarthrous infinitive as direct object in Jn 5:26, overlooking the not-obscure Lk 11:1]), it is one of the more important reference grammars around for New Testament Greek.

A Pleased User

Wallace's grammar is excellent! It is very thorough and very detailed, but also very understandable and readable. (If you disagree, just try reading through A. T. Robertson's grammar to compare!) It is full of illustrations and charts and contains detailed explanations and offers many examples of syntactical categories. He also discusses many debatable and exegeticaly significant passages, giving the eveidence for different positions. To make it even more useful, there is an index of subject, one of Greek words and one of biblical passages. It is by far the most user friendly advanced grammar in print. It is part of the same series as Mounce's beginning grammar. (For more reviews on similar books.....

very interesting and touching

Every author on a book tour should be required to visit a prison to give a reading and participate in a discussion. Some of the women prisoners in this book would be a challenging audience indeed for a writer. One woman states she "can't stand a book that just lies there".

The chapters are oral history excerpts of eleven incarcerated women. Many women in prison are illiterate or nearly so but there are also dedicated readers. Some may read to escape their environment and circumstances so they read romance novels, "urban" novels, science fiction, and mysteries. Others read for different reasons - "I want a book to stay with me. I want it to impact me. I want it to make me think. I want it to change something about the way I view tomorrow." Tough standard to meet for many writers.

Each chapter of this book is broken into two sections - one section consists of excerpts from conversations with the woman about her life and what brought her to prison and the second section includes excerpts from conversations about books. The life story sections are so sad they make you want to cry. Virtually every woman had grown up with parents or other relatives who abused drugs or alcohol and who participated in domestic violence with each other and their children so they grew up susceptible to the same elements. Many of these incarcerated readers hope a book will illuminate their lives - tell them what went wrong and why and instruct them how to do it differently when they're released. They analyze books together and share reading material. Some women even absorb the characters to the extent that friends call each other by the character's names and quote lines from the books to each other. These are some serious readers.

I read this book about 2 weeks ago, and it is nothing short of what I expected: that is, a book that would practically yet powerfully make arguments for the existence of God and - more importantly - gateway into the person of Jesus Christ. Theism is the richest worldview not because it adds the greatest quantity of explanations (indeed, gods like Zeus or Thor or Allah fail to add any explanation) - but because it offers one explanation: the person of Jesus Christ; by Him, the personable attachment of theism is enabled.

This book therefore brings us first into the logical possibility of theism by grounding arguments, simply put, in God. The reader will essentially learn why the theistic worldview is most coherent in general. Afterwards, the final chapters will speak on the person of Jesus Christ to make a "fully" coherent view. Without a personal deity, theism simply becomes empty, like a well that cannot supply water: Deism.

However, holding to Deism after reading this book will almost certainly make little sense. The arguments alone from the cosmological argument provide us with erudite reason to believe the cause before us was, as well, personal. Indeed, the entire argument before the Christian chapters in this book point towards a personal deity in general.

Consequently, we are left with the choice of picking up 4 different sponges to clear up the black sludge on the window of reality after reading this book. 1) We may choose to pick up the water-less sponge of atheism and find ourselves with no success in our attempt. 2) Or we may pick up the agnostic sponge and find ourselves able to clear up only half of the window. 3) We may even boldly pick up the deistic sponge and clear 3 quarters of the window. 4) But only will we have enough soapy water in the theistic sponge to clear up the entire window of reality.

And once we do that, we will undoubtedly find not only God's image in the window but, as well, Jesus Christ's.

This is arguably the greatest friend-sharing friendly and user-reading friendly book I've read on Christian apologetics. You'll remember many things to apply in real-world discussion. It helped me with many of my own doubts.

On Guard does two things very well: (1) Prepare Christians with mature, well-developed arguments that properly defend the existence of God (2) Educate Christians who have never seriously thought about some of the peripheral philosophical and existential questions surrounding their faith.

In the end, On Guard succeeds in making you feel confident about your beliefs and thus eager to engage others. As Craig excels in explaining, Christianity is not based on “blind faith” but makes perfect rational and logical sense in the world in which we all live.

The book is roughly divided into three parts: the first two sections tend to work outside of the Bible and detail arguments for the existence of God from the stance of reason and philosophy. Here, Craig searches for answers to existential questions (e.g. Why does anything exist? Why did the universe begin? What about suffering?). These questions weigh evidence and tend to rely on science and logic alone. The final part works from within the Bible and provides historical and academic defenses for some of the Bible’s central truth claims including the existence of a historical Jesus and evidences of the resurrection.

In the first two parts of On Guard, the author makes his arguments by analyzing premises that support a conclusion. While this makes perfect logical sense, everyday people tend not to converse this way so a reader may afterwards find themselves unloading the arguments and breaking them down in more relatable ways. In a more formal academic debate, however, the way these arguments are presented may work perfectly. And from a personal standpoint, in a few instances the author will veer off into theology and make some claims that are debatable. Neither of these reservations take away from the power of the central thrust of the book.

Christians need at a minimum a clear and systematic way to defend and articulate what they believe and why. On Guard is not a one-stop solution but is a legitimate first step in the process that will equip you with the tools you need to engage in an informed, intelligent debate.

dated, but a classic

This book is worth the effort of searching out a copy, and paying double, triple or beyond the orignial price. It's a wonderful reference work for those interested in recreating the look of historic costume, or ethnic dress from 100 years ago.
Each garment is shown in a watercolir line-drawing illustration, most of the time accompanied by a rendering that shows the number and shape of various pattern pieces needed to construct the garment.
I did find that there is a stronger emphasis in Eastern European garments than I found totally interesting. But by and large, this is a treasure.
I did note one anachronism and one inaccuracy. Native Americans are here--in this book put together before 1945--are here listed as ``Red Indians.'' And the famed woven Chilkoot dance blankets of British Columbia are described as appliqued rather than woven. But all in all, this book will have pride of place on my costume-making reference shelf.

Helen MacInnes (1907-1985) was the Scottish-born American author of 21 spy novels. Above Suspicion

Above Suspicion is the first thriller by Helen MacInnes, an author largely forgotten about now, but once a very established and successful writer. She married Gilbert Highet, a Classics scholar, in 1932 and translated German literature with him. Like the characters in this novel, both her and her husband spoke fluent German and spent their summers travelling in Europe. Gilbert Highet also served as an MI6 British intelligence agent and his wife's novels were so realistic that her third book, "Assignment in Brittany" was required reading for Allied intelligence agents about to be sent to work with the French Resistance. As you can tell, you are in safe hands for a realistic novel about Europe in 1939, which is where Above Suspicion is set.

Frances Myles lives with her Professor husband Richard in Oxford. The married couple enjoy climbing and travelling in Europe, as MacInnes did herself. It is 1939 and Europe is poised on the brink of war. Frances and Richard are hoping for one last summer of peace, but it is not to be. When Frances goes to collect Richard from his rooms for a party, she finds an old friend visiting and he wants them to do a job. He is hoping they will go abroad that summer as usual, meet a man in Paris and then continue the journey as he directs them to obtain information the authorities need badly. An agent who has been running an underground railway in Germany has stopped sending the normal messages and they are afraid he has been captured or compromised and they are hoping that "a couple of innocents abroad might be able to get through all suspicion."

Richard is happy to go, but does not want Frances involved. Frances is, however, absolutely not going to be left and, as things should continue as normal, she gets her way. What follows is a chase across Europe, with the couple under scrutiny from the moment they leave England. Europe has changed - now men march everywhere, there is violence in the air, their rooms are searched and they are followed. While in France a woman states, "one war is enough for one lifetime," but war is coming and both Frances and Richard know it is unavoidable. While in Europe they meet up with Robert Thorney, who they know from Oxford, and Henry Van Cortlandt, an American journalist. "You're not the kind of people to handle trouble; you're not tough enough," Van Cortlandt tells Frances, but this is the story of normal people being called upon to do extraordinary things.

This really is a superb story - with excitement, seriously unpleasant bad guys and a real undercurrent of fear. With hindsight it is easy to say that everyone knew what would happen. In 1941 it was not sure at all which way the war would go and so, in many ways, MacInnes is writing some stirring propaganda here. During the novel, Frances attempts to explain to their new American friend why war cannot be avoided and gives a plea for friendship and involvement to the country she was later to spend the rest of her life in. Frances is an excellent heroine - headstrong, opinionated and always very brave, she believes in what she is doing. Above Suspicion was made into a film in 1943, with Joan Crawford, and it is wonderful to see her books appearing on kindle.

Good book, weak but not awful Kindle edition

It's nice to have Helen MacInnes available on Kindle. ABOVE SUSPICION, her first novel, is a good thriller about a British professor and his wife -- ordinary people, in the Eric Ambler tradition -- on a spy mission in Nazi Germany.

Some of the other reviewers have suggested the characterization is clich�d. I disagree. It's quick and shallow, as befits a thriller, but the Nazis are presented fairly, and the chilling scene where the heroine hears a terrible scream from the Jewish quarter, and the police not only do not look into it, but prevent her from trying to do so either -- that scene, I believe, comes from real life. Nazi Germany was a deeply unpleasant place.

Indeed, what's unbelievable is not that the Germans are menacing, but that the protagonists are able to get away from them. It takes some tricky plotting to find them a good way out. But MacInnes controls her pace and place-setting so well that we accept the escapes when they happen.

EXCEPT for the Kindle. Like so many Kindle editions, this one has errors here and there we can see, and perhaps many more which we can't see. For a long time all a reader might notice is the occasional unnecessary, comma. But then, right at the climax of the book, come three lines missing from page 300 or so, appearing on about page 303, and a general feeling that as much as a page of text may have dropped out entirely while all that misplacement was going on.

Reading a Kindle is like finding a half-destroyed set of books in a burned-down building. How lucky we are to get things so cheap -- and how sad it is how much we have to miss, in payment for all that convenience.

If I were a real MacInnes fan, I'd recommend getting a print version and eating the extra cost. As things stand, I can only warn you: the Kindle ABOVE SUSPICION is good enough to see you home in peacetime, but it wouldn't get you out of Nazi Germany.

Anna is chosen by Detective Chief Inspector Langton to join his team investigating a series of murders of prostitutes. There is almost no evidence identifying anyone as the killer, but the team continues to dig until they uncover puzzling clues pointing to a handsome, famous movie star. It seems unlikely that this wealthy man is the murderer, but as the investigation continues, he turns his charm toward Anna. Or is he stalking her? Suspense builds until we reach a gripping climax to a most enjoyable story.

Opening my awareness and trust in life.

I am impressed with this book of daily inspiration. I have four others in my home now. This one is fitting for each topic that I bought the others to cover. Mr. Cohen is so clear on the steps to opening to what is, and what can be. Prior to placing my order with Amazon, I watched a You Tube of an interview with him and was so impressed I now have this book and three others are on their way to my home. I am very grateful to this author for a long needed change in my life and a soft way of landing on this path.

I am a 12 stepper and this book is perfect for our finding understanding of a Higher Power of our own, and thereby succeeding in the steps of recovery.

An AMAZING book that has been a bit life changing for me!

I came across this book at Savers one day. I like self help and feel good books, but a lot of the "daily inspiration" books tend to be a bit cheesy. This book, however, is NOT! It is WONDERFUL! I purchased a second copy to send to a family member, because it was so incredible! I believe I have found birthday gifts for everyone I know for at least the last year! :) It made my days better, more meaningful, and tons more positive! LOVE IT! and can't wait to read more by this author! He is an incredible and extremely enlightened individual! EVERYONE should have a copy of this book in their homes!

Inspirational reading to start each day.

A friend introduced me to this book, and we've shared daily readings many times since. Each day is given one page of varying length, and generally provides a heart-centered inspirational story and message. Each concludes with a sort of prayer (e.g. for 11 Jan, "Show me where I have protected myself from love, that I may step forward and live in the light."), and an affirmation (again from 11 Jan, "I open my heart to all the love there is.")

Some days messages are far more meaningful to me than others, but that changes with the events of my life, and often the serendipity of life allows this book to underscore lessons in my life.

Lyme disease is the fastest growing infectious disease and it is now epidemical in the Northeast, Middle West, and Northwest regions of the United States. The number of reported cases has doubled in last decade and the infection scale has become larger than HIV. Aside from hepatitis C, Lyme Disease may be the second largest infectious disease in this country. Worldwide, it is also rapidly spreading in Canada, Europe, and Asia. There is great controversy concerning the diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis of Lyme disease, especially regarding the chronic and persistent form. This controversy has often left chronically infected patients without adequate medical care. Due to the special features of the Lyme spirochete and its multiple co-infections, conventional Western antibiotics treatments have not proven to be very effective. Stand-alone antibiotics treatment has become less effective overtime due to increased resistance and adaptation of germs. The Western medical approach to this infectious disease is to focus only on killing the pathogen. It does not address the complexities of the Lyme pathogenesis and various associated complications in chronic infections. About the Author
About the Author – Dr. Qingcai Zhang Following graduation from Shanghai Second Medical University in 1962, Dr. Qingcai Zhang worked as a physician at the Medical University’s Reijing Hospital, conducting clinical and laboratory research to integrate Chinese and Western medicine. He later became an associate professor of medicine at Shanghai Second Medical University. In 1980, he was awarded a World Health Organization scholarship, which supported his two-year fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1984 he worked as a research fellow at the Wakai Clinic in Nagoya, Japan. A year later, he received a one-year appointment from the University of California at Davis as a visiting professor. From 1986 to 1992, Dr. Zhang was the primary researcher at the Oriental Healing Arts Institute in Long Beach, California, where he conducted research on treating AIDS with Chinese medicine, designed herbal formulas for the treatment of AIDS, and published two books on AIDS and Chinese medicine. He began his private practice in 1990, first in Cypress, California, and then in New York City. He is the founder of Zhang’s Clinic in New York City and White Plains, New York. Since 1987, he has been focusing on treating chronic viral infections, such as viral hepatitis and AIDS; infectious diseases such as Lyme disease; and autoimmune diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Zhang is a member of the Hepatitis C Caring Ambassadors World Class Brainstorming Team, the Advisory Committee of the Science of Polaris Corporation, Dr. Weil’s web site, and the Silvia Science Pharmaceutical Corporation. He has given lectures on modern Chinese medicine and AIDS, hepatitis, and Lyme disease nationwide. Its a simple read book. He goes over the basics (which you can read online for free) and then promotes his products - which again you can read online for free. I called him - very nice man. Willing to talk and help. Herbs are expensive. His main tool is Allicin (garlic) but check if you have a CBS mutation that doesnt allow you to process sulfur - the main compoment in garlic/allicin.
