Outstanding resource on Late Roman/Byzantine strategy

This is a beautifully produced translation of the Strategikon, a military manual attributed to the eastern Roman emperor Maurice and thought to have been written sometime between A.D. 580 and 600. Packed full of the accumulated wisdom of a thousand years of Hellenistic and Roman experience in warfare, the Strategikon was meant to be a primer for the novice general--roughly the Western equivalent to Sun Tzu's "Art of War."

Simply put, the Strategicon is a gold mine of historical data on the Roman army of the late 6th century. It is of particular interest because this period marks a time when Roman power had made its last vain attempt to regain authority over the Western provinces of the Empire, and was now undergoing a period of contraction and collapse. The Strategikon describes an army whose core is no longer the heavy infantry of the early Roman Principate, but armored cavalry lancers and archers. It is a time when Greek was fast becoming the predominant language in Roman society as a whole, while vestiges of Latin remained in the jargon of the army. The legion of old was replaced by the meros, the centurion by the hekatontarch.

The Strategikon records many aspects of the Roman army life at this time, including: induction of new recruits, description of ranks and responsibilities, formation of units, drills, rules, punishments, instructions on marching through enemy territory, foraging for food, and the set-up of fortified camps. It is rich in advice for the prospective general when battling against the various enemies of the Empire, from the Persians, to the Slavs, to the Avars and Goths. Perhaps most interesting of all, it contains several detailed diagrams for the order of battle of a Late Roman/Early Byzantine army of various sizes and configurations. It also gives a great deal of advice on how to defeat the enemy via guile, deception, misinformation, ambush, concealed traps, etc.

All in all, the Strategikon is a source that can not be neglected for the scholar of the Late Roman or Byzantine army. The University of Pennsylvania Press is to be congratulated for making the work available in such an accessible and attractively-produced volume.

Practical, concise, classic

Maurice was apparently a very practically minded commander for this book of advice is packed, in a most readable and concise form, full of advice for tactics, strategy, and logistics. It is a treasure for the student of ancient warfare desiring knowledge of the every-day challenges of commanders. Mr. Dennis' translation is very readable while not losing too much of the Greek terminology the serious student will be seeking.

Maurice organizes his advice into an introduction followed by 11 books on topics including calvary and infantry formations, strategy, tactics, logistics, ambushes, sieges, and an analysis of the strategy and tactics of other people's in his time. The back matter of the book includes a brief but fairly thorough glossary and a good index. The front matter includes a full page map of the Byzantine empire circa AD 600. Various troop formations and orders of battle are illustrated by simple yet clear sketches and text-art.

No library of ancient history is complete without this work. Each book division can be studied alone as your interest leads making it especially useful as a reference book. At the same time, the translation and style makes it an easy read as a solid overview of ancient warfare. The thoughtful organization makes it a perfect companion for study and classroom use.

It's ok

Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man and the current Wasp, and Eric O'Grady, the current Ant-Man, must team up to recover a powerful invention stolen by AIM. As a bonus, there are four of the original tales of the Ant-Man and the Wasp.

The main story is okay. The plot is good, the story flows nicely, and there is plenty of adventure. The problem is the two main characters. Henry "Hank" Pym is supposed to be grieving for Janet Van Dune, his former wife and the original Wasp. That is why he has taken on the mantle of the Wasp. He is also opening a center for abused women in her name (since he abused her as well). He is also trying to make up for the loss of his friend, Bill Foster. But, to me, he just came off as distant and cold.

Hank is still better than Eric though. The current Ant-Man took on the role when he stole the equipment. The reason he wants to be Ant-Man is to help him seduce women or to spy on them in the shower. He drinks too much, lies, will betray anyone at the drop of a hate, hangs out with known criminals, and is not that bright. I did not see a single characteristic that made me like him or care what happened to him.

When you don't care for the main characters, it makes it hard to care what happens in the story.

As for the backup stories, they had the problems that were so common to comics from that time. The villains were campy and tended to set up overly elaborate traps for the heroes. The heroes had inconsistencies, species relating to their powers. Ant-Man does not fly so he propels himself by a catapult cannon. But then you see him turning and even hovering in midair at times. Most of the time, their shrinking actually makes it harder to catch the bad guy. Janet is called Janice at times. Just small things, but still they distract from the story.

If you are like me and was wanting to get caught up on Ant-Man before the movie, this is not the collection to read. Look for a collection with Scott Lang. That is the character that is Ant-Man in the movie. But if you just wanted Ant-Man in general, especially some very early tales, this collection is okay.

I was honestly bored and just slogged through until the end. The stories are dated and haven't aged well. There are much better comics available for the money - Saga, Revival, Outcast, etc.

About the Author
Larry F. Jeffus has over forty years experience as a dedicated classroom teacher and is the author of several Delmar Cengage Learning welding publications. Prior to retiring from teaching, Professor Jeffus taught at Eastfield College, part of the Dallas County Community College District. Since retiring from full-time teaching, he remains very active in the welding community, especially in the field of education. He serves on several welding program technical advisory committees and has visited high school, college, and technical campuses in more than forty states and four foreign countries. Professor Jeffus was selected as Outstanding Post-Secondary Technical Educator in the State of Texas by the Texas Technical Society. Professor Jeffus has served for six years as a board member on the Texas Workforce Investment Council in the Texas Governor's office where he works to develop a skilled workforce and bring economic development to the state. He is a member of the Apprenticeship Project Leadership Team where he helps establish apprenticeship training programs for Texas, and he has made numerous trips to Washington lobbying for vocational and technical education. Larry F. Jeffus holds a Bachelor of Science Degree and has completed post graduate studies.

A college text on Welding

This is the book we used in a college-level welding course I took. It covers virtually every aspect of welding from oxy-fuel, stick, MIG, TIG, SMAW, cutting, basic metallurgy, brazing, welding certification requirements, etc. This text is very detailed and you can directly reference chapters on welding processes you're interested in doing without having to read the entire (very thick) book. It is an excellent reference and covers step-by-step how to safely setup and use all types of welding gear, how to lay correct beads, how to spot defects, proper weld preparation, safety, and lab exercises to test your skills.

I own several books on welding and this one blows them all out of the water by a very wide margin. The price is college textbook high, but you get what you pay for with this volume. This is a very professional and well organized reference and should be on every welder's book shelf.

The above review is for the fifth edition of this book. Older versions are around but you should purchase the latest edition to keep abreast of new welding practices and techniques.

An Excellent, well-written and well organized text

I have used an earlier edition and this edition in self-study of welding technology and as an aid in the development of my welding skills necessary for certifications. The text is exceptionally well organized and thorough. The material is comprehensive in explaining not only about the various welding technologies, but also in presenting the proper techniques and practices of welding, including great color pictures showing both good and bad practices. Every aspect of the welder's skill set is covered. Additionally, there are comprehensive end-of-chapter review questions, an excellent glossary, and a useful index, which perhaps could be beefed up somewhat. All in all, this was a very readable, worthwhile addition to my metal trades library . My money was well spent.

happy body here I come

I have been overweight since I was 5 years old. I gave up trying to diet over 15 years ago because I was sick of failing. I am a night owl and had been a midnight snacker, the later it got the hungrier I got. I read the book about 2 weeks ago and out of 14 days I have only snacked 3 times and I've lost close to 2 kilos already. I also am looking at the relationship with my body differently, I no longer see it as my enemy !! I feel better about my body and my self. can't recommend this book highly enough.

Tom Brophy spent 18 years with the New Jersey Department of Labor in the unemployment division. Tom's mission in life is to help as many people as he can re-establish their professional and personal lives. Through his own experience of being suddenly out-of-work and through interviews with thousands of unemployed people, Tom has a unique understanding of the emotional issues of unemployment, and of the strategies required to create a healthy outlook and a more efficient job search. Tom explains: "In 18 years, I spoke one-on-one with thousands of unemployed people. In most cases, we met for an eligibility interview where I verified their claims and made sure they were doing everything necessary to remain eligible for their benefits. Like most rookies, I followed the procedure to the letter. I had my interview form and simply went down the list looking for job prospects, phone calls, contacts made, and other customary procedures. "As time passed, I discovered I had a lot in common with the 'first timers.' I had owned my own business for more than 20 years. When it closed, I was devastated - and I had no idea how to get through each day, much less find a job. With no energy or self esteem, I felt unwanted and scared. How ironic it was to land a job through networking with friends in which I spent each day hearing the same pain I'd felt myself only months before. "As I grew more comfortable as an interviewer, I'd ask, 'How are you feeling?' or 'How do you spend your time?' Candidates who sensed that I was genuinely interested in them often broke down and cried. They were hurting and disoriented. Should be entitled "Big Victories".

At last a someone has written a "readable" length book,full of common sense that we can all understand. None of us has been left untouched over the last few years by the superbug - UNEMPLOYMENT. We all know someone or have felt personally the misery and stigma attached to it. Where to turn and what to do are all graphically described by Tom Brophy. Why didnt someone else think to write this over the years? It is hardly a new problem but Tom has picked the bones out of it and outlined this refreshing approach.

I live in the North West of England and I have already passed Toms book on to 2 friends who agreed with every word.

Tom, keep up the good work and we eagerly await future publications.

Common Sense You Won't Find From Career Coaching Websites

Anyone that is looking for work - new college graduates, unemployed people - should read Tom Brophy's book. Giving concrete advice for approaching the job search, Brophy gets right down to his points. He gives clear examples of how to network and explains why sending out resumes day-after-day is a waste of time. While the book doesn't follow tradition writing conventions (e.g. there is often text underlined or boldfaced where it shouldn't be) and sometimes the writing lacks organization, when it comes down to it, the book is still worth the read. As an unemployed person who's been scouring blogs and career-related websites, I value Brohpy's insights and see that even the career coaches aren't telling people what Brophy is: resumes are a waste of time. If there is one lesson I will take away from Little Victories, it is to stop sending out resumes and to start aggressively networking via LinkedIn and other social media.

Important but limited

As a Women and Gender Studies professor, I am constantly on the lookout for books challenging normative sex and gender roles. While I Am Jazz is an important book for introducing children to the concept of transgender, I was disappointed to see that "girlness" was equated to princesses, pink, and mermaids in this text. While stereotypical gendered behavior is often a key factor in parents and health care providers realization of a child's transgender identity, it is limiting to both our trans* and cisgendered (non-transgendered) children to set up such binary categories of male and female behavior. I would have liked to see more of Jazz the soccer star, Jazz doing a science project, Jazz doing art, and the emphasis on what made her transgender placed upon her sense of self, not her love of dresses and mermaids. Still, many thanks to young Jazz for bravely sharing her story with other children.

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

As a retired senior citizen who has suffered lifelong gender dysphoria, I credit my doctor and therapist, Jazz and her NEW book with helping me to understand the physical and psychological pain that has tormented me since very early childhood. This pain has been a regular visitor in my life because I was born with hormonal and brain differences whose effects on gender identity become more and more powerful with time--regardless of what I do.

Recently, my physician and therapist have helped me understand that I am a person having a transsexual experience I never chose to have. I pray that those of you who reject such medical explanations for why a boy would want to be a girl--especially parents of transgender children--will love your kids unconditionally. Don't punish them, or throw them out of the house--they have a medical condition that, without your love, and the support of schools and society, can lead to anxiety, depression, and death by suicide.

All kids need to be known, accepted and loved--no matter what. This is more true for kids who are transgender than for almost any other group. Thanks to you and your family, Jazz, your book is helping all of us understand a little bit better now! Thank you for a story that has helped me make sense of that time when I was your age, and no one knew how to help me deal with my neuro-endocrine difference! Sincerely,

Introduces "transgender" concepts to kids in a clear, age-appropriate way

As a straight mom of three, I can honestly say that this book brought tears of joy to my eyes as I read it. It is a beautiful affirmation of the essential humanity in all of us, and it is a clear and age-appropriate way to introduce kids to the diversity around us. For those of you who are concerned that children might not understand or be confused by the concept, rest assured. Using my kids as a focus group showed me that they not only "get it," but they are much more open to these concepts than many adults.

Great book

I am half way through a semester teaching with this book and I could not be happier.
It presents topics in a very well thought out way. It does not emphasize one particular processor
which is a good idea. It teaches PRINCIPLES, not specifics.

When I look at the organization, I can tell that the author is a good teacher. He is a master of presenting
material in a logical, well thought out way.

The specifics of a particular processor can be found in a data sheet. In fact, other books
I have used are little more than expanded versions of processor data sheets.... oh but one major
difference... they cost a lot of money.

I like the idea of teaching students the principles first then bringing in current (and accurate)
material which gives an example of the principle. Using this book, for example, I can talk about
registers in general, then give examples in the PIC18, PIC32, MIPS, 6800 Etc processors,
and compare.

I prefer to teach from principles versus a particular processor. Why? Because
(A) In the workplace the student is not likely to use the processor *I* select.
If the student does not understand the basic principles he/she will have to start from scratch.
(B) processor technology changes quickly. Any particular processor will be dated within a few years.

The bottom line: great book about principles BUT, you will need to augment the material with specifics
about the processor you may be using.

One suggestion for the publisher: It would be great to lower the price of the book a bit given that it is a soft cover...

fairly nice but basic

Well ,When I bough this book I was looking for a definitive guide on interfaces & programming them.Particularly for teaching ends. This is not it! It is however a very nice introduction to both areas whereas the software & design part is to little, in my opinion.Considering interfacing ,a few (fairly good)examples are given but they are few.All in all I consider it a little to shallow for EE majors .It is however easily readable and not complex , it could serve in a more obscure course of some sort.

About the Author
Professsor Felix Sharipov graduated from the Moscow University of Physics and Technology, Faculty of Aerophysics and Space Research, and the Ural State Technical University. Since 1988 he is active in rarefied gas dynamics, since 1992 at the Federal University of Parana in Brazil. His research interests are numerical methods of rarefied gas dynamics applied to microfluidics, vacuum technology and aerothermodynamics. His group develops both probabilistic and deterministic approaches. Prof. Sharipov was organizer of numerous vacuum gas dynamics meetings, and published over a hundred journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. He is a member of editorial board of international journal ?Vacuum?

Great Technical Book

This book is a very useful addition to my engineering library. The mathematics of low-density gas flows is carefully developed without being obnoxiously dense. My favorite feature of this book is the successful balance that is provided between theoretical development (equation derivations) and practical applications including (1) numerical simulation results and (2) numerous tables of engineering values useful in practice. Thankfully there is an extensive table of symbols used throughout the book so that the reader does not have to constantly search for the meanings of variables in the equations. There is a good description of DSMC simulations, as well as informative discussions about gas/surface interactions (including an excellent section on accommodation coefficients), velocity slip, acoustics, and transport coefficients. These are followed by extensive presentations of 1-d and 2-d flows (planar and axisymmetric), for example free molecular orifice flow. There is unfortunately no discussion of vacuum plumes. However, the crowning achievement of this book is the remarkably extensive set of references that is thoughtfully presented throughout the text, facilitating deeper investigations by the reader where necessary.
