Can 1.2 billion exceptionally nervous nervous systems be wrong? No way, says depth psychologist Elaine Aron, bestselling author of The Highly Sensitive Person. An HSP herself, Aron is also the reigning expert on the subject, and this workbook exists to make you a more helpful expert on yourself. It can be read in conjunction with her more narrative book--the chapter headings match--or without it. "You should use this workbook in any way you darn well please," says Aron in a typical free-yourself comment.

So what is an HSP? Aron thinks one-fifth of humanity is born with more finely tuned perceptions than the rest. In primitive times, HSPs were the first to spot the lion lurking in the bush, the last to shoot the arrow--and the likeliest to hit the lion in one shot. Later, HSPs became the tempering priestly advisors to the more aggressive warrior kings. To be an HSP is a challenge and an opportunity, she argues. This book contains self-tests to determine whether you're an HSP, and if so, which kind: introverted, extroverted, sensation seeking, and other plausible categories. Some HSPs yearn for "earlids" to shut out sound, for instance. There are plenty of blanks to fill in as you analyze your childhood, health concerns, work history, and psychic wounds, with plenty of guidance on how to do it--sample entries as intriguing as someone else's diary. If you've ever wished you could go back and retort to somebody who said something hurtful that made you speechless, Aron has the exercise to channel your resentment into insight. She gives a quick course in dream analysis (Freud couldn't outdo her job on a dream about The A-Team's Mr. T and a tiger), and rather boldly invites you to envision and prepare for your death. This book Changed My Life

I bought this book after seeing the movie, "Sensitives: The Untold Story! " Changing my entire life!

Things I have been attempting to change my entire life were just NORMAL attributes of an HSP!! I cannot thank Elaine enough for writing this book and for the documentary made with a Kick Start campaign! I took her test on line at her site... highly sensitive person test, and answered yes to all the questions! I cover up most lights on my computer, printer, router and such. I have no sounds except the error sound on my computer. Never could watch violent movies, sensitive to bright lights, strong smells, loud sounds. Can feel everyone when walking into a room. If you "think" you might be one, it could change your life reading this book! I think you only need to answer yes to about 14 of the many questions.

I totally understood why my parents treated me the way they did. I was overly sensitive to so many things and they did not know what to do about it! They did not know "why"! Same with friends and teachers and my sister!

I am a CHANGED person and I Highly Recommend this book to Everyone! Why? Because you might have a friend, partner, child who is highly sensitive and knowing how to treat them, can change both your relationships. It turns out not only are 15 - 20% of humans highly sensitive, so are animals and insects in the same percentages! It is a Natural Trait and not an illness or disease. Scientists can see it in brain scans and DNA testing. We have been misdiagnosed for decades as being shy, withdrawn, depressed and so on, which is not true. I love, love, loved this book!

This may be the best book I have read in years

This may be the best book I have read in years. Maybe a decade. I was a year and a half into a very stressful job with a bully boss when I found this book -- I'd heard about it for years but thought the title sounded girlie and wimpy so I hesitated to read it. I don't like gooey, emotional, sappy stuff. Well guess what... no sap here. Or at least so little sap that a person who doesn't like sappy didn't really notice. Instead I found a smart, astute, science-based book which explained to me why I was slowly dying at my job, why I could not sleep at night, and why I was so stressed at work that I literally could not stomach my sandwich at lunch but would almost throw it up every day (but I could eat at home) -- I was operating at a level of physical stress which was impossible for a highly sensitive person to sustain, and yet I was somehow sustaining it. (I am very stubborn.) Once I actually looked at myself, looked at my actual situation, stopped blaming myself for being "weak" and "broken" and "not tough enough" and stopped trying to be what I am not, I saw clearly that I was ignoring my physical body's symptoms of extreme stress and hurting myself bad. Reading this was a wake up call at a time in my life when I really needed it, and gave me enough confidence to finally stand up to my impossible to please, bullying, manipulative boss and just quit. I am going back to school and retraining to become a software developer so that I can work in an environment that won't kill me. Not everyone is the same; everyone has different physical tolerances. If you find yourself "too sensitive" etc, give yourself a break. You are not a clone of the extrovert next to you. Pay attention to your body and read this book. IF YOU ARE AN EXTROVERT, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. If you are NOT highly sensitive, please read this book!!! I wish to God every human being would read this book so people could finally start understanding each other, and society in general would stop hurting those among them who are not built with the same nervous system that the 80% majority of humanity has!!!! This has nothing to do with race boundaries, religion, nationality... this is all about pure genetics and how our species (in fact how over 100 species on this planet) function. It's ground breaking work.

Wow… This book was INCREDIBLE!!!! I'm still trying to take in everything that is brought to the front of my mind that I never realized or even thought about until I read this book. I don't think this is just for sensitive people but for everyone. If anyone has dealt with any kind of trauma in their lives or as a child that causes you to be an internal person than I think this book is for you. It will help you start to realize that you keep yourself in a protective shell inside your body because that's where you feel most comfortable. This book will help you realize what you've done to allow yourself to stay there and not become the person that you truly were meant to be. It's time to start dealing with your past once and for all and move PAST it… Letting anything control who you are and what you do isn't good. There is more happiness in your life than you could ever imagine.. Again this is a MUST READ.

Great Narratives

This collects some of the greatest and most important slave narratives. It includes the first known slave narrative ever written by Olaudah Equiano (A.K.A. Gustavus Vassa). That was probably my favorite one out of all of them because it was very adventurous. It is also intriguing because it was the first narrative ever published from a Black person. All of these narratives are great, and you can really learn a lot about the history of slavery within the pages of this book.If you love reading black literature, you should definitely pick this book up.

A Must Read!!!

I'm so glad to have purchased this book!! I was a teenager during the Civil Rights Movement and there were little to no indepth stories or articles about the lives/experiences of my ancestors during the slave years. Oh sure, we heard or read about such notables as Harriet Tubman, the 'Moses' of the Underground Railroad, Frederick Douglas, andd George Washington Carver, and others, but this narrative gives the reader an insight into the lives of some of the obscure individuals, not mentioned in history books.

This book or others similar should be read in addition to the history books about the founding of the United States.

It is a nice compendium of the major primary sources (slave narratives) that are available. My major complaint is not content but that the binding is so crappy. It is tight and likely would break if you actually tried to hold the pages open.

Great book on the use of healing language in dentistry - for patients dentists and hypnotists

Very good book for learning about the use of hypnosis and persuasive hypnotic language in dentistry. It is primarily geared towards dentists but definitely useful for hypnotists as well. It will also help dental clients to know about the mechanisms involved in their fear and phobia related to dentistry and provides easily understandable ways of addressing these to have a good experience at the dentists.
Juan has done a great job in making it easy to follow. The book flows well. Good job

The definition of La Douleur Exquise is the heart wrenching pain of wanting someone you can't have, and this book from J.R. Rogue lives up to its title. The poems contained within the pages are heart wrenching, and soul consuming. They are real, and I felt all of the heart ache that Rogue pulled from the depths of her soul.I tried to pick a piece from the book that I could choose as a favorite, but the fact is that I found myself identifying with everything. There is not a poem in those pages that deserves more praise than the one before it. Every line written is as beautiful as it is painful, and I found myself constantly drawing from that pain. There is not one person on the planet that has never felt the feelings on these pages, and while reading it was a great reminder that we are never alone. There is always someone out there that has gone through similar instances. Beautifully heartbreaking

Beautifully heartbreaking words! For anyone who has experienced unrequited love or who has had their heart shattered by love This is for anyone who loves poetry, or even if you've never read a single poem in your life. It's (currently)set as a great price for kindle, so get it now!

I discovered her because one of my favorite authors posted some of her work on Instagram. I immediately fell in love with the sadness in her words and was looking for more of her work. I was so excited when I found out she was releasing a collection of her work and immediately pre-ordered this. This surpassed all of my expectations! I can't describe the emotional puddle I become every time I read this.

“I think I can feel it
most days
in the in-between;
you spell my name in strange
ways- b l a m e.”

You can feel Jen’s pain through her tragic words. It's amazing how intimate poetry can be, it feels like she gave us a huge part of herself. Her words read like a classic already. She is easily my new favorite poet of our time!!!

Thought-Provoking and Genuine.

"For every lover who has tasted the unrequited kind, too many times."

Before I even began reading the poems, from just this line, I knew this would be a great read. I connected instantaneously and the poems that followed surely didn't disappoint. J.R. Rogue writes in such a raw, honest way - it's beautiful.

It reads like a journey, rather than a random string of poems. It's very cathartic, I was completely unable put it down - at the beginning, I related so strongly to that heartache, but by the end I wanted to feel that same release felt in the last poem. I love that it's honest, I love that it doesn't sugarcoat love as something that is always beautiful and perfect, but simultaneously still offers the hope that things will improve and we can stitch ourselves up and continue on. Highly recommend.

Emotive poetry for those who love and have once loved

I'm a lover of the poetry J.R. Rogue shares for free on Instagram. I wanted to support and thank her for sharing her emotive words with us and purchasing this collection with the lovely, illustrated cover was definitely the way to go.

I thought I was going to read only a couple poems a day (ya know, spread them out a bit) but then I finished it in a day. No regrets lol. Although I will be returning to this collection again after I experience a heartbreak like these.

Must-read... even if you are NOT a political science academic!

Democracy, Intelligent Design, and Evolution: Science for Citizenship is an extremely well-crafted, researched, and written examination of arguably one of our most important subjects. Even if you are NOT a political science academic (which I am not), this book is an important and thought-provoking read. Professor Liebell successfully makes the case for properly positioning evolutionary science in schools, and at the same time minimizing its clash with religious views, for a better, more civil, and more realistic social and political outcome.

NOT REALLY A "BIOGRAPHY," BUT NEVERTHELESS QUITE INSIGHTFUL

Philip Glass (born 1937) is a composer of "classical" music who has also achieved a measure of "popular" fame. Robert Maycock, an English music writer and critic, has written a fascinating the insightful portrait of him (the subheading on my copy of the book is "A Portrait," not "a Biography," and is a much more accurate description of the work). There are numerous biographical details that come out in the course of the book, but don't expect this to be a "composer's biography" in the Maynard Solomon sense.

Glass first achieved recognition as a composer in the so-called "minimalist" tradition. Of his music from the "minimalist" period (e.g., Music in Twelve Parts, Two Pages: Contrary Motion - Music in Fifths), Maycock says, "The music of that period is essential Glass and is as far as some listeners have ever gone. What followed does not seem so different at first, but over the decades it has continued to evolve until it has reached a kind of music that is only distantly related, in the way that a great-grandchild might bear a family resemblance to the first generation. The attitude and the content change. So it follows that listening practices need to change, too."

But Maycock notes importantly, "Of the composers who came to maturity in the age of minimalism, Glass has developed more than any, while remaining to some extent an outsider to mainstream traditions." Glass himself wrote, "The true minimalism was really over by the end of 'Music In Twelve Parts,' composed in 1974. If you look in the history books and the university curricula, they tend to write about those pieces because that's what they know. There's 25 years of music that they're missing."

In the last 30 years (covered by this book, which was published in 2002), Glass has expanded his output, particularly exploring the symphonic genre, with mixed reviews: "Classical critics too did not like the Glass: Low Symphony, but that is a situation that crops up again and again with his work." Glass has also written film scores for movies like "Kundun," and his music was used in the movie "The Truman Show."

Maycock writes, "it is a fact that Glass works a lot. He takes on projects when he is already busy, he accepts commissions that apparently distract him from his main artistic focus and ... he has composed a substantial body of orchestral music without ever intending to."

For fans of Glass, or for those seeking a perceptive introduction to his work, this book is highly recommended.

Not really a biography, but a terrific reference book

Finally there's a comprehensive book about Glass and his music, with a musicologist's approach.
I think it's exactly the book that was needed, because, even if traces mr.Glass's biography in very broad strokes, the book is more of anan analysis of his music in its different forms.
I think it's a terrific book because:
1- It's by an independent writer, so no hagiography, but a very objective and interesting analysis, all the more valuable for that.
For example, the author is not shy of talkingabout controversial issues, like the critics' attitude towards mr.Glass. (you know, those guys that sneer at his music because it does
not conform to the standards they already have pre-set in their minds)
2- The general tone is that of a vey well-researched and authoritative (if somewhat kinda too concise) book, aimed perhaps more to the informed listener than to the professional musician, which is just fine with me.
It is, actually, a very readable book, especially enlightening when explaining Glass's musical evolution. It really gives you the idea of how and why the music has evolved the way it did.
3- The descriptions of the pieces are great. They're just
like very well written but concise program notes, which is
nothing less than what this marvelous music deserves.
To give you an idea, it's so refreshing to read about the Low Symphony discussed in the same terms of a mainstream full-fledged classical symphony! (which is exactly what it is, in its peculiarly Glassian way)
4- The writer had mr.Glass's endorsement, so there are a few illuminating interviews and, above all,tantalizing descriptions of the pieces that aren't yet recorded , like symphony 6, cello and piano concertos, because the author could listen to the composers' tapes from the performances.
( as you will have gathered, this book is VERY up-to-date)
By the way, are you guys at Nonesuch sleeping? Where the hell are those cd's?? Just reading mr. Maycock's enthusiastic description of the 6th symphony gave me a glance at what we're missing. I know corporate guys don't really care about the music, but hey, Glass SELLS!!
A few minor quibbles: there are no photos and the chronological list of works that closes the book is a bit too concise ( usually in such lists you also get details like first performance, recordings etc.)
Strongly recommended, nonetheless.

Resoundingly disappointing

Easily one of the worst books I've ever read.

I expected an analysis and I got an egotistical self-aggrandizing viewpoint from a writer who clearly missed the fundamental compelling nature of Glass's music.

Interviews with Glass were ramblings on how poorly classical music is disseminated to common people by writers who don't understand music in general. Duh.

No significant comparisons or parallels are ever made to place Glass within a context of modern innovators of music theory and no thorough examination is made of Glass's most critical works.

Much too much writing about how Glass's music remains unacceptable to the stagnant community of classical American composers. Guess what? When you innovate in a conservative social environment it takes awhile before your ideas catch on. Who knew?

Glass is no angel but he has contributed significantly to the repertoire of modern music and the important matter at hand is HOW and WHY that has occurred.

When I read other documents and interviews about what Glass says about his own work I gain knowledge about both Glass and music in general. By contrast this book is a rambling soliloquy of the writer's revelation that music actually exists outside of his own narrow 19th century understanding of it.

Forget this book: Go get some CD's of Glass's recordings. Until the other troubles began. Of course, Lucifer wasn't to blame for the return of a vengeful ex-con to placid Fishersville (or was he?). But a series of burglaries and the donation of a freezer chest to St. Bede's filled with something most macabre soon has Mother Grey researching the "Clavicles of Solomon" and looking for hexagrams. And with her companion, Detective Dave Dogg, out of town, she has only the Lord's help, and her own sharp wit, to find out who was doing the devil's handwork when a body -- headless and unnamed -- is found....

Episcopal priest Mother Grey continues her mission to her church, St Bede's, and her town, Fishersville NJ. Murders keep getting in the way, however. And wonder of wonders, her nemesis Father Bingley is very helpful, though unwittingly. Most of the people encountered in Bury the Bishop show up again here, joined by some new ones, such as an oily dealer in semi-antiques. And if only Mother Grey had been able to convince Saraleigh that 2 children by 2 different fathers were enough. Lord help us.
