DE BEAUVOIR’S CONTROVERSIAL (BUT FASCINATING!) LETTERS TO HER LIFELONG COMPANION

Simone Lucie Ernestine Marie Bertrand de Beauvoir (1908-1986), was a French writer, intellectual, existentialist philosopher, political activist, feminist and social theorist, who was closely associated with Jean-Paul Sartre and Existentialism. She wrote many books, such as The Second Sex, The Mandarins , She Came to Stay, The Woman Destroyed, The Ethics Of Ambiguity, Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter); The Prime of Life; Force of Circumstance); All Said and Done, Adieux: A Farewell to Sartre, Wartime Diary, etc.

These letters were published posthumously in 1990. The editor wrote in his Introduction, “the publication of her correspondence… demonstrated the radical incompatibility of her and Sartre’s whole conception of free human relations… with the somewhat rose-tinted, soft-edged public image she had herself at times helped to create… What provoked the outraged reaction of so many to the posthumous publication of these letters? At least three strands converged here. First, traditional sexism… Secondly… ideological Reaction: the posturing of intellectual yuppiedom… More significant was a third strand made up of former of still-would-be sympathizers, who now felt De Beauvoir had revealed herself in her letters to be dismayingly OTHER than the idealized image of her they had so long been nurturing…De Beauvoir’s letters to Sartre … are love letters … and they are concurrently the unsparing account of those other---‘contingent’---loves allowed for in her pact with Sartre… De Beauvoir herself is a validly heroic figure… [who] produced a work which stands and will stand as the baseline of all aspirations for equality between the sexes in the modern world.” (Pg. vii-ix)

In September 1939, she wrote, “My love, DO ANSWER what I say in my letters. I want to talk to you. I do so long for something solid and hard to hold on to---do speak to me.” (Pg. 79)

She comments in December 1939 on the writing of ‘She Came to Stay’: “The new version of Chap. 3 is finished; there’s a somewhat philosophical conversation between Pierre and Francoise, but I think it’s indispensable. That makes 60 pages of the novel that are in final draft form (subject to your judgment)---it’s proving terribly quick to rework, and enjoyable too. I’m hoping by the end of February to have gone over all last year’s work. And there are another 300 pages drafted, which will only need putting into final form.” (Pg. 234)

In March 1940, she wrote, “I’ve read a bit more of [Kierkegaard’s] ‘Fear and Trembling’: it’s badly constructed and long-winded, but that fellow did realize what an existential ethics was---and you can already sense there what Kafka owes to him. I’ll read the other one too, since he interests me more then I expected.” (Pg. 304)

In July 1940, she explains, “I walked to the Nationale, and that was when I began to decipher Hegel’s Phenomenology---with the help of Wahl’s book and some English commentators. But it’s discouraging, since each of them makes clear at length how he understands nothing. I found it agreeable to be back there---it reminded me of the time long ago when I was preparing for my aggregation. Also, it restored my equanimity to rediscover philosophy and books---all those things which are truly real, and so solid and which we’ll never be without.” (Pg. 326)

In July 1940, she wrote, “it’s an absurdity to speak of one epoch being more comfortable and agreeable to live in than another, from the standpoint of the mind. Everything obviously depends upon what you expect of the mind---what you want and hope from it… And the combined influences of Hegel and events have caused me to adopt from within… this attitude, not too far away from Spinozism, that always used to be so alien to me. It’s far more accessible and obvious through Hegel, of course, than through Spinoza. Thus I’m living not exactly cocooned in philosophical optimism---for my ideas aren’t clear enough---but at least on a philosophical plane such that optimism is possible. I so wish we could make a comparison between your ideas on nothingness, the in-itself, and the for-itself, and the ideas of Hegel. For there are many analogies---although Hegel turns into joy that which for you is instead gloomy despairing. It seems to me that both are true, and I’d like to find a point of equilibrium.” (Pg. 335-336)

In January 1941 she stated, “I’m dying to do some real philosophy---there’s heaps of stuff I’ve now assimilated---but by God! how I long for some solid discussions! How I yearn to talk to you! If I were condemned for long never to talk, I’d end up WRITING philosophy, from the need to express myself. I got down to Hegel again with my pupils this morning, and I find him interesting, even though I’ve become a bit repelled by his system.” (Pg. 369)

In February 1947 she said, “[Richard] Wright’s wife told me how stressful an American woman’s life it. I was so delighted: on Sunday morning, that angel Richard Wright’s going to take me to a Gospel Church in Harlem---apparently it’s astounding. I’m also going with his recommendation to see the authors of ‘Black Antiquities’ in Chicago. He has taken charge of my interests in a fantastically kind way.” (Pg. 421)

Those looking for philosophical sophistication in these letters will mostly go away disappointed; but for those wanting insight into De Beauvoir’s mind and personality, and for details of her relationship with Sartre---as well as with various other lovers (female and male)---this collection will be a “page-turner.”

wanted French; settled for English translation

Time and again I am told that such and such a book is not available in my country ... but it is listed in the available e-books.

This is really quite vexing in general : we will have to wait until the National Library in France make unexpurgated letters available and for the Sartre estate to pass out of the hands of Elkaim-Sartre.

In the case of Lettres au Castor, all of 1933 and 1934 is "missing" according to the estates. Do not be surprised if they are available to the next generation to assess Sartre in Nazi Berlin !

A must read : "A Very Comfortable Occupation" on J-P S and S de B.'s careers advancements in occupied Paris. What a pair !

Practical, informative, helpful

Have not read the entire book, but found and perused excellent selected preview content (significant sections, on another website). Expect to order this book soon.

I am not a physician, clinician, nor mental health professional.

However, due to dire circumstances, I needed good sound practical information about the illness, precipitating factors, metabolic issues, differential diagnosis, neurological and neurochemical aspects.

Found more here than I expected.

It gave me perspective, understanding, and more hope; there is a history of the syndrome in medicine and psychiatry, clinical tables of causes, tests, and treatments, case histories.

While a complex medical condition that is not well understood, there are good treatment options.

Catatonia is underappreciated

The book is well written, with many case histories scattered throughout to round off the theoretical parts. Comprehensive enough not to miss out on major points yet not too broad-stroked to get lost in theory. Should be very useful for clinical practice. Max Fink delivered a small masterpiece with this one by pairing up-to-date science with rather classical, european-inspired clinical writing.

DSM criteria do not provide good diagnostic guidelines for catatonia and thus, perhaps, we are missing out on too many cases. A must read for the mental health professional.

About the Author
A.W. TOZER began his lifelong pursuit of God at the age of seventeen after hearing a street preacher in Akron, Ohio. A self-taught theologian, Tozer was a pastor, writer and editor whose powerful use of words continues to grip the intellect and stir the soul of today's reader. Among his best-loved books are the classics The Pursuit of God and The Attributes of God.

JAMES L. SNYDER is the pastor of the Family of God Fellowship in Ocala, FL, a Christian and Missionary Alliance church. He is recognized as an authority on the life and ministry of A. W. Tozer, and has written a number of books as well as numerous essays in Christian periodicals about Tozer. Snyder has a weekly radio ministry and writes a nationally syndicated newspaper column: "Out to Pastor." In Pursuit of God: The Life of A. W. Tozer, Snyder's first book, won the Reader's Choice Award in 1992 by Christianity Today. He has authored and edited 27 books. Through more than 40 years of ministry, he and his wife, Martha, have been involved in three church-planting projects prior to their current ministry. They have three children and nine grandchildren.

Who has ever heard of a Christian being in a Rut?

Tozer is one of my favorite writers. He had a God given talent for laying the honest truth down on paper and convicting the heck out of me. I read this as a gift. I have since ordered it for my entire church board, after one lady I loaned it to came back crying over it's impact, stating that everyone in the church should read this book. Well- I can't do that. But our board is going over it chapter by chapter.
If you want to be convicted and see your spiritual condition read this book. In a vast sea of worthless Christian books this is a must read.

One of the best and most relevent of our day books by Tozer

This is a book that fits right into the context of our day. If ever there was a book that the lethargic church needed to absorb, this is it. I am going through the book with my church leadership. My favorite Tozer book is The Pursuit of God. What that book is for the individual, Rut, Rot or Revival is for the church. This is a must read!

This is indeed one of my favorite books from Tozer. Nobody possessed a greater talent than A.W. Tozer when it came to pulpit ministry and inspirational writing. His own personal commitment to Christ shows through his works and his living example encourages and challenges the reader to press on toward the mark of the high calling of Christ. In this timeless classic from Tozer, you will see a pretty good picture where you stand with Christ, and where you ought to stand. While the world is changing around us, the Christian should be seeking revival of the old paths charted by the gospel of Christ, that the world has long left behind. I so highly recommend this book to the sincere Christian. Written many decades ago by a man who has long since been absent from our presence but committed his life to showing others the way to Christ.

Edward Chancellor (editor and introduction) is the author of Devil Take the Hindmost: A History of Financial Speculation (FSG, 1999), a New York Times 'Notable Book of the Year' and editor of Marathon's previous book, Capital Account: A Money Manager's Reports on a Turbulent Decade (Thomson Texere, 2004). Mr. Chancellor is an award-winning financial journalist, who has written for the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Reuters and many other publications. He is a former member of the asset allocation team at GMO, a Boston-based investment firm.

An investment Gem

Truly a joy to read. A more holistic and complete harnessing of Marathon's investment philosophy than Capital Account. Practical wisdom exudes from these well-written pages of recent market history. Essential reading for a fundamentally-driven investor. Poignant discussions around key value drivers; capital allocation, sustainable competitive advantage, business model, investor psychology and industry capital cycles. Honest discussions via client communications adds a layer of authenticity. Take your time with this book, you will be well served. Capital Returns enters a worthy list of my favorite investment/business books: Charlie Munger the Complete Investor, More Than You Know, Origin of Wealth, Antifragile & Capital Returns. Enjoy!

Every finance library needs one

Wow! This is a highly refreshing finance book. Being in the finance industry for several years, I have ready countless finance books. Most don't add much new and refreshing information. Capital Returns was extremely refreshing and made me see and think about new things. This is one I will definitely need to reread again and again. The sections are short (pieces of Marathon's letters over the years), so you could read a section a day.

Read it, think hard and reread it

This is the even more brilliant sequel to the already superb 2004 book Capital Account. Edward Chancellor, the author of the classic Devil Takes the Hindmost, picks and chooses among the 2002 to 2015 Global Investment Reviews written by money manager Marathon Asset Management. The essays are sorted into themes. The benefits for us all of keeping some sort of diary, writing monthly investment letters or in some other way document happenings, the zeitgeist, thoughts and feelings become more than apparent. This wasn’t too long ago, but things that shouldn’t be forgotten are starting to fade away from ones memory. Here Marathon lets anybody peak into their diary.

Capital Returns has three important sections. The first one is what sets this book apart from its prequel; Edward Chancellor has written a terrific introduction that spot-on describes the main features of Marathon’s investment philosophy. The next section presents essays that dive deeper into this philosophy and the final one looks to the buildup of, the crescendo of and the resurrection from the Great Financial Crisis. Although there are several interesting topics in the latter they are pretty well discussed and I will focus on the investment philosophy parts.

As any investment philosophy it contains several components but what differentiates Marathon’s thinking is their focus on The Capital Cycle and a number of industry supply factors. Here they clearly stand out. It’s been a long time since reading an investment book gave so many impulses like “I should start a time series of this” or “Hmm, perhaps I could build a model of that” etc.

So what is The Capital Cycle? It’s really no magic; in good times when returns on investments are impressive and corporate valuations are higher than the replacement cost of the productive assets, industry capacity increases by pooling of new financing – equity and credit - into the area, allowing existing companies upping investments and new companies entering the market. All earn good money but after a while the added supply and increased competition will overwhelm demand and the cycle will turn. In troubling times productive capacity will be retired, companies will leave the market or simply go bankrupt and eventually the lessened supply and competition will face a demand that is improving and the cycle of over and underinvestment starts anew.

What I see as unique in this is the strong focus on the supply side and how they systematically track a wide number of parameters to understand the cycle on industry, sub-industry and corporate level. Not all industries are capital heavy but you can still get a fair grip of whether industry capacity is increasing or decreasing. True to this analysis, the evaluation of corporate managers and their incentive schemes also zeros in on capital usage. How managers understand the capital cycle and allocate capital is critical for long-term corporate success and then you cannot have incentive schemes that promote myopic profit maximation and “optimal leverage” at any given moment in time.

The book discusses two types of investment cases that follow from the cycle, the franchise stock that can retain a ROIC longer than the market price and the turnaround case that will improve its ROIC more or faster than the market price. Importantly, the turnaround is not necessarily a traditional bottom-up case, but is rather found by a top down analysis first and corporate analysis second. This opens up more investment options.

The writing almost has the same philosophical depth and enjoyable language as that of Howard Marks, the theoretical depth isn’t exactly that of a Michael Mauboussin – but not too far away. What comes on top of this, as the cherry on the cake, is the down to earth and vivid discussion on business operations and day-to-day investing.

Worked well for High School students

I purchased this for a high school environmental competition, as a study aid for the team member doing aquatic ecology. The competition is designed to cover college level material. The student using the text said it was extremely helpful, and explained things in a way that she could understand. The book was shipped quickly, and arrived in perfect condition, even though it was listed as "used."

Book hard to understand at times

I had to buy this book for a class on aquatic ecology. The professor didn't teach well and we had to read the book on our own and try and figure it out. It is packed with information, but I wouldn't recommend this book to people who don't have a background in this subject area.
