Satellite networking has evolved significantly since the first telecommunications satellite, from telephone and broadcast to broadband and Internet networks. This evolution is also reflected in research and development, including the recent studies of onboard processing, onboard switching and onboard IP routing. There are also continuous research in satellite communications and networks, including resource management, security and quality of service, multicast, video conference and broadband satellite access to the Internet. Additionally, there has also been the development of new generation standards such as DVB-S2, DVB-RCS2 and IPv6networks.

Blair takes a close and blistering look at high-level defense policy and ground-level leadership of the U.S. Army in Korea from the opening of the war in 1950 through the first yearthe "pendulum period" before the final battle lines were drawnthen summarizes the subsequent "talking war" period, which lasted for two years. That first year, the author amply demonstrates, was a ghastly ordeal for the Army, partly because of President Truman's untimely strip-down of the armed forces, and partly because of incompetent leadership in the field. No historian has been more critical of General Douglas MacArthur's leadership during this period than Blair is in these pages. He also faults corps and division commanders, especially General Edward Almond of X Corps. On the other hand, his admiration is unstinting for General Matthew Ridgway, who took over a demoralized field army and quickly turned it into a fighting force. Clay Blair's "The Forgotten War" ranks among the very best war books I've ever read.

I recently finished reading “The Forgotten War: America in Korea, 1950-1953,” Clay Blair's massive history of the Korean War. I purchased this 1,200-page tome not long after I finished David Halberstam’s “The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War.” Written by journalist, historian, and novelist Clay Blair, “The Forgotten War” was first published in 1987. To this day, it is widely regarded as probably the best overall history of the Korean War. I share that view.

“The Forgotten War” is a comprehensive and a highly detailed account of the Korean War from the American perspective. Clay Blair examines nearly every aspect of the war – political, economic, cultural, and military. He traces the war from its roots in the late 1940’s through the cease-fire that was negotiated in 1953.

Blair is unsparing in his criticism of nearly every major figure involved in the war. They include President Harry S Truman (whose obsession with slashing military budgets led to a state of disastrous unpreparedness), to General of the Army Douglas MacArthur (whose massive egotism led him to be completely out of touch with the situation on the ground in Korea), to the field commanders (many of whom displayed a singular lack of leadership on the battlefield). Blair’s judgments on what happened and why are clearly and convincingly argued.

I really enjoy Clay Blair’s writing style. “The Forgotten War” moves along at a brisk pace. Blair used a "top-down" approach to his work, which means he told his story from the perspective of the political leaders and senior commanders who fought the war. Very rarely does Blair mention junior officers or enlisted soldiers and Marines in his narrative. The advantage of this approach is that Blair covered a lot of different battles, although in less detail; the disadvantage is that readers don't get to know or appreciate what the soldiers experienced as they were confronted with hordes of enemy soldiers.

Blair writes with concise, impactful sentences and paragraphs that keep the story moving forward. Even sections dealing with the strictly political aspects of the war – especially the book’s first two chapters – held my interest. Of course, once I got into the sections dealing with the fighting, I found myself so fascinated that I now find it difficult to put the book down.

My only gripe about “The Forgotten War” is that it’s not available in an ebook version. I purchased a hardcover edition of this massive 1,200-page doorstop. It large, thick and heavy. I, for one, would certainly benefit from being able to read a Kindle version of “The Forgotten War.”

Despite this minor complaint, “The Forgotten War: America in Korea, 1950-1953” remains a brilliant work of scholarship and superb, fast-paced writing. It ranks among the very best war books I’ve ever read. Most highly recommended.

A necessary read but shouldn't be your only one on the subject

A roller coaster of an effort. Blair's detailed retelling of battalion level combat in the first year+ of the conflict is exhaustive and provides the reader with quite a good understanding of the ebb and flow of action. This is not narrative history and the guys holding the guns make few appearances other than some of the Medal of Honor recipients. Blair's intent rather is to portray the command level decisions which helped define the nature of the conflict. In this he is only moderately successful at best. He clearly has a low opinion of many of the high-level players including Truman, Walker, and MacArthur. He also faults a great deal of the mid-level Army leadership, especially in the earlier parts of the conflict. Whilst many of those he criticizes do fail to hold up to close examination, there exists a certain air of shrillness to Blair's critiques that strongly suggests he has an axe to grind and is guilty of a rather skewed perspective. He also frequently lets Almond off the hook for his egregious failures as a person and a commander which is rather strange given Blair's willingness to skewer others. I will say that to his credit Blair's attitude seems to come from a sincere desire to protect the folks who had to pay the price for others poor decisions so it is not simply criticism for its own sake.

I also have some issues with the maps as there are not enough of them and the ones provided frequently do not display the same depth of detail as his narrative. The book is huge, why not enhance it with another 10 or 12 pages of meaningful cartography?

Overall this is a book you should read if you desire to develop a deep understanding of the Korean conflict but it should not be taken as a definitive account and should by no means be the only book you read. Pick up Halberstam and Millet to see some other perspectives as well.

A monumental history

A monumental, meticulously researched and footnoted history that exposes the shocking failures of the Truman Administration--criminal, treasonous failures that almost destroyed the US military and our nation's ability to defend itself and our national interests. The Administration lied over and over to the American people about the Soviet threat, and even denied at first that South Korea had actually been invaded by a tough, disciplined, USSR-trained and -equipped, Red Chinese-supported NORK army in overwhelming force that swept away the pathetically armed and trained ROK constabulary force.

Coastlines around the world—even Antarctica and the Arctic—are represented, and the chosen spots include some spectacular inland waters, such as the Bras d’Or Lakes and the North Channel of Lake Huron. For each of the 50 places, the sailor recommending the venue spins an entertaining yarn about his or her experience there, and each description is accompanied by a "make you want to go there now" photograph.

Great Idea; Mediocre Execution

Chris Santella`s "Fifty Places to Sail Before You Die" is an interesting but ultimately disappointing book. Although the idea of a collection of unforgettable places to sail is an excellent idea, this book is one of unrealized potential.

The author contacted and interviewed famous sailors from around the world - racers, charterers, instructors, photographers, etc. - for their favorite places to sail. For each great sailing area, he wrote a 3-4 page blurb about the area, and included a small bio of the expert along with some basic information about how to travel to the area, when the best sailing season is, and information about local accommodations and charters.

Unfortunately, Santella does not sell these sailing locales. I expected a book on great sailing areas to include numerous dazzling photographs of each area, but most of the sections include only one picture from the area (some none). Too many of the write-ups focus on the history of sailing an area or other trivia instead of the reasons to sail that area now, and there are no maps to give one a flavor of the area - another must, to me, in a book about sailing locations.

Despite these drawbacks, there is still some interesting information in this book and the sailing locales are a nice sampling of different types of sailing locales. Ultimately, although this book did not give me a burning desire to travel to many of these places, this book is still a worthwhile purchase for anyone with a love of sailing.

Too much of a Chamber of Commerce Approach

Having been to 33 of the 50, I was looking for more reasons why they were chosen as the best places to go. There were very poor descriptions or justifications for the choices. Some totally missed the main attributes of the places chosen. Merely a business description of places chosen.

About the Author

Bilal M. Ayyub is a professor of civil and environmental engineering and the director of the Center for Technology and Systems Management in the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, where he has been since 1983. He is a leading authority in risk analysis, uncertainty modeling, decision analysis, and systems engineering. Dr. Ayyub earned degrees from Kuwait University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is a fellow of the ASCE, the ASME, and the SNAME, and a senior member of the IEEE. Dr. Ayyub has served on many national committees and investigation boards and completed numerous research and development projects for governmental and private entities, including the National Science Foundation; the U.S. Air Force, Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, Navy, and Department of Homeland Security; and insurance and engineering firms. He has received multiple ASNE Jimmie Hamilton Awards for best papers in the Naval Engineers Journal, the ASCE Outstanding Research-Oriented Paper in the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management, the ASCE Edmund Friedman Award, the ASCE Walter Huber Research Prize, the K.S. Fu Award of NAFIPS, and the Department of the Army Public Service Award. Dr. Ayyub is the author/co-author of more than 550 publications in journals, conference proceedings, and reports, as well as 20 books, including Uncertainty Modeling and Analysis for Engineers and Scientists; Risk Analysis in Engineering and Economics; Elicitation of Expert Opinions for Uncertainty and Risks; Probability, Statistics and Reliability for Engineers and Scientists, Second Edition; and Numerical Methods for Engineers.

Richard H. McCuen is the Ben Dyer Professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Maryland. Dr. McCuen earned degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. His primary research interests are statistical hydrology and stormwater management. He has received the Icko Iben Award from the American Water Resource Association and was co-recipient of the Outstanding Research Award from the ASCE Water Resources, Planning and Management Division. He is the author/co-author of over 250 professional papers and 21 books, including Fundamentals of Civil Engineering: An Introduction to the ASCE Body of Knowledge; Modeling Hydrologic Change; Hydrologic Analysis and Design, Third Edition; The Elements of Academic Research; Estimating Debris Volumes for Flood Control; and Dynamic Communication for Engineers.

This textbook is required for a course I'm taking. I wish there were more examples to accompany the information. Additionally there are no solutions in the appendix to check your work. Lastly it is currently not supported on chegg.com. The book is fine otherwise.
