teaches highly value added skills

All mainstream computer languages implement a common set of data structures and algorithms. If you are a computer science student, you must learn these at a level that you can at least facilely code using them. What language you do it in is probably secondary. Well here, Lewis and Chase instantiate the pedagogy in Java. A good choice. They have updated this second edition so that it uses Java 1.5 (aka Tiger).

They assume you have a rough working knowledge of Java. This is not the time or place to go over basic syntax. Though you should already know the basics of object oriented programming, they give an entire chapter to thoroughly discussing how to do so. In this chapter, you should pay close heed to the section on interfaces. More than many other aspects of Java, interfaces help you build modular code. To explicitly reduce the coupling between different classes, where one class might call the other. Instead of doing a direct call, if interfaces are used to mediate this instantiation, it is a huge boost to modular design. My only gripe here with the interface text is that I think it does not stress enough how useful this is. Only when you've tried to do a large project might you fully appreciate using interfaces.

Later chapters show you how the base Java comes with a rich assortment of very useful classes. That implement queues, linked lists, lists, stacks, trees and collections. These can match or even exceed what is available on these topics in the C++ Standard Template Library. While poor old C totally lacks them.

I teach Data Structures. I like this book because it covers a lot of material in an easy to understand way. There are several areas that need to be improved:

*The exercises are awful. I like to assign homework problems from the book, but I can't if I use this book.
*The material on stacks, queues, and lists is in a weird order. Some Linked List concepts are given in Chapter 4, then revisited in Chapter 6. By the time you get to Chapter 6, it seems like most of the Linked List concepts have already had to have been covered to get through Chapters 4 and 5. And the array and linked implementations are all mixed together.

Excellent, but only for the right purpose

This is an absolutely outstanding book, but it depends on your intent. This is not a general purpose Java book. In fact, the Java aspect is almost incidental. This is a data structures and algorithms book. It's intent is to teach core computer science concepts that trace their roots back literally decades, and will hold until the day comes when someone figures out how to exceed the Turing model, which will change life as we know it so substantially that *all* your computer books will become instantly obsolete. In the mean time, if you want to learn Java per se, do not buy this book! If you want to understand the building blocks of computer science, definitely buy this book. It's ability to concisely address all the key concepts is amazing. I teach a computer science class on data structures and algorithms, and I evaluated several books other than this one. At first glance, I did not like this book because it was so easy to read and presented concepts so effectively that I thought it was too lightweight. But as I read it, I was amazed at how well it covered everything, and did it with brevity and clarity. It starts from basic sets and linked structures and makes it all the way through complex trees and graphs. Again, don't get it if just learning Java is your goal, that is definitely not its purpose, but if you want to understand the foundational programming tools of computer science, this book is great. (Note: this book has been superceded by "Java Foundations", also by Lewis, and also a nicely enhanced version of the same great content.)

Not the best book on Napoleon

I bought this for my grandfather, who is a HUGE history buff. He taught it as a high school teacher and now reads 2-3 full books a day (unfortunately, that's all he does now). While he finished this book, he ultimately felt like he already knew everything that was in it and told me that it was, "Not the best book on Napoleon."

Napoleon The Man Lives!

Emil Ludwig, the author of "Napoleon," (1926) was a German author and newspaper reporter with a rare gift of combining exhaustive research with a very readable prose style which makes his characters seem alive and immediate. In his several biographies, of perhaps which "Napoleon" is his most famous, we seem to actually be present at the actions of the day, even reading the protagonists' minds --as it were-- to ascertain the "whys" and "wherefores."

In this authoritative but well-written and quickly-paced and "easy to read" biography, Napoleon the Man comes to life --as in few biographies before or since. Ludwig brings us a deep understanding of Napoleon's developing character, taking us along with him from his birth in the Mediterranean island of Corsica to his ignominous death in exile at St Helena, a wind-swept island "a 1000-miles away from anywhere else" --kept there because his enemies were in terror of the ex-emperor's being anywhere near them!

We see Napoleon as he was seen by his contemporaries in their letters and writings, and more importantly, as he saw himself --"hearing" his spoken words (as transcribed later) and reading his own personal and official letters, saved in dusty family and state archives. We meet his few friends, his many enemies, his avaricious family, his loyal Marshals, and his opportunistic Ministers of State, ready to betray him to save their own positions. We accompany him as a near-impoverished student at the royal French military academy at Brienne, and see him resplendent at his magnificent coronation in Notre Dame de Paris as Emperor of the French. We are at his side as he becomes first a lieutenant of artillery, and then as the general of artillery saving the day for the ruling Directory, and watch as he later meets Josephine, his future wife and Empress. We accompany him on his many triumphs --and few defeats-- in war --and in bed. We see him flushed with victory after victory, and near suicidal following his 2nd abdication and subsequent surrender to the British.

We follow the Man "following his Star" --sharing in his undreamed of heights --and in his desparate lows.

Napoleon lived 200 years ago --and We Are There.

The final answer to my (Post-Modern) Intellectual Prayers

According to these authors, the "root node" of culture is power, period.

Culture however defined, has everything to do with struggles to acquire, maintain and resist power -- power that in contemporary times is being used almost exclusively in defense of maintaining the existing status quo. In short, everything social or cultural is fundamentally about power, which is integral to culture. Jordan and Weedon argue rather persuasively that all signifying practices (that is, all meanings) involve power relationships. And while it is possible for power relationships to remain in a steady state, even then they usually signify dominance and subordination. In other words, they "subject" us in the sense that they define our "places" in society and our "modes of subjectivity."

To wit: We are either active subjects who take up positions from which we exercise power within a particular social configuration, or we are "subjected" to the definitions of others. And in this regard, power enables some group members to realize for themselves possibilities that are denied others. Among these are: the means to represent oneself and one's interests; the means to disseminate one's own works; the means to define oneself; the means to define meaning and to shape social values. And among the last of these is: the power to name; the power to represent common sense; the power to create "official versions;" and the power to represent the legitimate social world, among others.

In this series of wide-ranging case studies (that cover the entire socio-economic grid from class and gender to race), the authors suggest (in addition to the rather radical claims made in the above paragraph) that culture is the primary conduit of power; and that power is exercised and secured almost exclusively through "cultural meanings" and "imposed subjectivities." Using a Foucauldian lens, they thus conclude (and I believe they do so correctly) that cultural politics is mostly a struggle over meaning as expressed through power. Thus the fundamental cultural undertaking is about: How to construct such meanings; how to keep them fixed in place; how to define them; how to change them, and how to contest them. Moreover, according to these authors, meaning is not just a carrier of power, but is also the primary channel for its legitimation.

Focusing mainly on the relationship between culture, power, subjectivity and identity, Jordan and Weedon make a strong, clear and convincing case that understanding how properly to use cultural politics is a prerequisite to achieving (in practice) any sense of a secure cultural identity and liberated political and cultural existence. In this regard, the book succeeds in bringing together the best theory and the best practice (as case studies), of many of the best practitioners, and cultural writers and leaders, into a single volume. They do this while avoiding many of errors of other writers who have also tried to tackle these same sensitive and complex subjects, but who have done so by making the substance overly academic - that is to say, by making it unnecessarily dense and confusing. What these authors have done -- presenting a narrative that is profoundly academic without being pedantic and confusing -- is in itself no small accomplishment. For among other reasons, being able to do so makes it all the easier to expose the soft but subtle underbellies of the bane of cultural analysis: structural inequality, passive-aggressive sexism, and most important of all for my writings, institutional racism.

Stripped of the normal dense and almost impenetrable post-modern academic jargon, these authors succeed admirably in raising the central cultural issues being contested today out of the academic closet and into the light of day. Subjects such as: Whose culture should be dominant and whose subordinate? Whose subjectivity should be projected and whose ignored? Whose narratives are to be heard and whose silenced? Indeed, how are the histories, identities, subjectivities and cultural narratives of the powerless to compete in the market place of power? -- are topics that are not just addressed here, but also are given skillful and full academic treatment. In short, the book attempts to answer (rather than beg as many other books on these subjects have done) the central question of cultural analyses: How is economic and social democracy to be achieved in cultures where power is mal-distributed and societal tendencies are always tilted strongly in the direction of maintaining the existing status quo?

The grand conceptual paradigm of the book is one likely to endure and withstand the most serious of moral and intellectual scrutiny. It is that: despite being racially problematic, the Enlightenment ideas (its ideals and norms of the individual, human rights, justice and progress) for the most part remain an uncontested universally defined and accepted arena. The task remaining for the cultural analyst of course is to wrest other lesser cultural forms (norms and tenets of universal human rights) from the control of privileged groups -- white middle and upper class men in particular -- and extend them to other races and classes. But it is precisely this access to the language, the categories, the aesthetic norms and the narratives in which the universals are narrowly couched and played out that is the most problematic of all.

Ultimately, what is being contested is how precisely to impute new values and meaning into those already "loaded" aesthetic norms and categories, values and meanings that must be re-fashioned to challenge the old meanings (as well as their conceptual containers). These authors' answer is a deep but troubling one: In the postmodern world there is no single truth. There are only at best more or less comprehensive and convincing versions of the truth that carry within them particular social implications. Truth in the end is a "discursive construct" which differs across histories and cultures, as well as between different interest groups within the same culture: Whoever has the power to define "Truth" in any society also has the power to define (Sartre's) "Others."
