USS INDEPENDENCE CVL-22, A War Diary of the Nation's First Dedicated Night Carrier� ("Enhanced Edition II")

This is a comprehensive history of a fast WWII aircraft carrier, and her air groups. The book details the ship from concept through construction, launching, outfitting, shakedown and entry into the great Pacific war, where the CVL-22 would earn Eight Battle Stars. CVL-22 participated in strikes against Japanese held Marcus and Wake Islands, then Rabaul on its way to the Gilbert Islands.

After healing from extensive torpedo damage off Tarawa, USS Independence reemerged as our nation's first dedicated night carrier. Follow the story of the ship and her aviators in action against the Japanese Empire in the Philippines, Okinawa, Indochina, and onward to the waters off Japan.

Squadrons that flew off the USS Independence included: VF-6, VF-21, VT-21, VC-22, VF-22, VT-22, VF-27, VT-27, VFN-41, VTN-41, VF-46, VT-46 (and VF-33 for one day at Rabaul).

First released at the ship's reunion in September 2011 the book has been extremely well received by the crew members and their families. This is a revised "Enhanced Edition II" with 89 additional pages (from the First Edition). The glossy hardcover 8.5" X 11" book has roughly 350 photos, and 40 maps, charts and diagrams and an extensive index.

About the Author
John G. Lambert joined the US Naval Reserve and served aboard the (Essex Class) aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard, CVA-31, in 1965-1966 on a West-Pac for 9 months, as an Avionics Technician in VAW-11.

With keen interest in the sea, he surfed on the west coast, and later became an advanced scuba diver. Hobbies were diversified from boating to water skiing, snow skiing and photography.

He learned to fly in 1970, then purchased plans, and built his own plane, a Burt Rutan designed VariEze. He raced it, and flew it from coast-to-coast and border-to-border. A member of the EAA, he headed up a experimental aircraft builders group in San Diego for a number of years, and became both active with (and historian of) an experimental aircraft racing group.

With his background in the navy, and aviation, he wrote a book on the history of the WWII aircraft carrier USS Independence, CVL-22, at the request of the ship's Reunion Group.

The book has involved approx. 9 years of research, with trips across the nation to places including NARA - The National Archives in College Park MD, and NARA San Bruno CA, the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Tailhook Association in San Diego, to name a few. First released in 2011, with file changes made since for inclusion of additional historical data and photos.

John was invited to join Dr. James Delgado on the joint NOAA / Navy / Boeing / Coda Octopus mission to obtain 3D side scan sonar images of the USS Independence on the bottom of the Pacific off Half Moon Bay California in 2015.

An excellent narative about the ship and it's men

I have been anticipating the book ever since John Lambert contacted me about using my brother's diary. The book is everything I hoped it would be. It is filled with details about the ship and the struggles of the men to fight her. I especially appreciate the way that John Lambert has worked in the story of the enlisted men who kept the ship going and the planes flying. The story of CVL 22 is an untold story until now. It is my hope that the men who sailed and fought her as well as their families will be able to enjoy the story and that many others will learn to appreciate their sacrifice. The book is well written and is difficult to put down.

Extraordinary "war" book! Well-researched.

I know the author, John Lambert, and can attest to the incredible amount of research that went into bringing this fine work to publication. Over four years of intense research, including travelling from coast to coast, gathering material and interviewing many of the surviving pilots, officers and seamen who fought from the deck of this mighty ship.

Anyone interested in the War in the Pacific will love this book. And, if you have an interest in the "Mighty I" in particular, you'll be doubly rewarded. I doubt there's a more thorough, well-written, reference work anywhere. It is truly a tribute to those who served but did not return.

The War Record of USS INDEPENDENCE!

Wow and Double Wow! There are books and then there are labors of love. John Lambert's USS INDEPENDENCE CVL-22 clearly fits in the later category. Sub-titled A WAR DIARY OF THE NATION'S FIRST DEDICATED NIGHT CARRIER, It is one of the most detailed aircraft carrier histories I've ever come across...and a wonderful tribute to the brave men who served on and flew from the 'Mighty I.'

Clocking in at 834(!) pages, Lambert's book supplies a day-to-day chronicle of CVL-22's life and times. INDEPENDENCE started life as the light cruiser AMSTERDAM but was then converted to a light carrier. CVL-22 subsequently saw combat in 1943, '44 and '45, deploying various Air Groups. At war's end, it ferried servicemen home as part of the 'Magic Carpet' operation. It was utilized as a test vessel at the July 1946 Bikini Atoll A-bomb tests and was later expended as a target for Navy weapons in 1951. CVL-22 earned eight battle stars for its Pacific service.

The book interweaves deck logs, ships' logs, personal diaries and first-person reminiscences to tell INDEPENDENCE'S story. Along with providing a thorough accounting of CVL-22's career, Lambert's book is bursting with hundreds of photographs, diagrams and maps that showcase every aspect of its life - construction, crew, air groups, battle scenes, etc.

USS INDEPENDENCE CVL-22 sets the standard for carrier histories. Thorough, readable and well-illustrated, Lambert's book is a compelling account of one carrier's war in the Pacific. Highly recommended.

Comprehensive Guide

First of all Little Big Planet 3 (LBP3) is my first ever LBP game. I owned a previous system prior to owning a PS4 but I can say that I love LBP3!

Now onto the guide. This guide is excellently put together and is as dense a material as tge game itself. The guide is jam packed with all item locations and level as well as a giant tutorial on create mode. What a great resource for the die hard LBP fan and the newbie player alike. For under $20 you really can't go wrong with this guide.

Good book. Worth it to complete the game.

The book was a tremendous help in completing the game. Some sections I would never have figured out. While most of this info can be found on various web sites, having it in a book I found easier than sitting thru equivalent YouTube videos. Good reference section. However some parts took careful reading to not miss how to gather some of the options, like the Illuminator. The index does not reference tools such as the Illuminator.

About the Author
J. Michael Geringer is a professor of strategy and international management at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. He earned a BS in business at Indiana University and MBA and PhD degrees at the University of Washington. He has authored or edited 14 books and monographs, over 110 published papers, and over 35 case studies; he serves on the editorial boards of several leading international academic journals; he served as the Saastamoinen Foundation Chair at the Helsinki School of Economics in Finland; he was the founding chair of the Strategic alliances Committee of the Licensing Executives Society; he served as the chair of both the International Business and the Strategy and Policy divisions of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada; and he is past chairperson of the Academy of Management’s International Management division. His research has appeared in the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Management, Columbia Journal of World Business, Management International Review, Journal of Management Studies, Human Resource Management Journal, Long Range Planning, Organisation Studies, and Journal of Applied Psychology, among others. He has received 11 “best paper” awards for his research, including the Decade Award for most influential article from the Journal of International Business Studies. His teaching performance has earned numerous awards in the U.S., Canada, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe, including the University Distinguished Teacher Award. Michael S. Minor is professor of marketing and international business at the University of Texas, Pan American. His research focuses on comparative consumer behavior, international marketing strategy, political risk, and the consumption of high-technology experiential products. He has published in the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of Consumer Marketing, International Studies of Management and Organization, the Journal of Services Marketing, International Business Review, Journal of Interactive Advertising, and elsewhere. He has written for business and popular media from PCWeek to Tennessee Business Magazine. He is past chairperson of the Consumer Behavior Special Interest Group, and past vice chair of the Technology and Marketing Special Interest Group of the American Marketing Association, as well as a former member of the Global Marketing SIG’s board of directors. He is active in DOCNET, the association of business doctoral program administrators. He serves on multiple editorial advisory boards and is the coauthor with John C. Mowen of several consumer behavior books. He has won multiple master’s-level teaching awards and was recently the doctoral program professor of the year. His consulting experience includes work for UNCTAD’s Division on Investment, Technology and Enterprise Development and several U.S. and state government agencies. He has reviewed grant proposals for the Research Council of Norway as well as several U.S. agencies. He lived in Asia for a number of years, and speaks Chinese. He relaxes by playing the mandolin and harmonica for the country/classic rock groups RiverRock and Coastlands.

Jeanne M. McNett is a professor of management at Assumption College, in Worcester, Massachusetts. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an MBA at the Cass School of Business, City University, London. She has had expatriate assignments in Germany, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Korea. Her interests include the role of culture in international business and the pedagogy of international management. Her publications include The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management. Vol. VI: International Management, 2nd ed., Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2005); and The Blackwell Handbook of Global Management, Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2004). Her teaching, research and presentations have received many awards, including The Roethlisberger Best Paper of the Year Award from the Journal of Management Education and the Alpha Phi Alpha Teacher of the Year Award. Her articles have been included in journals and collections focused on teaching in the area of international business. She is an avid master rower and enjoys running, reading, and gardening.

Wonderful text for a International Business Student

International Business by Ball et.al. is a great book. I just took my last exam from WIU. The book is current and has material covering up-to-date content. Many of the companies listed in the book are large American Corporations (Coke,GE, Kraft, MacDoanlds, etc.) just to name a few. If you are going to take a course in International Business requiring this textbook, contact me for a good price on a like new textbook with clean pages and the code the has never been used. This book does a good job at explaining the do's and don't of international business. If you are seeking to explore the foreign market and/or are a college student majoring in business, this book is a MUST!! I am learning so many things about the trade, business and all the above.

This books is not half-bad. It takes the complexity of all the facets of International Business and rolls it up into an economic study of the global market. Train Lovers Basic

These original format books are charming. The stories, while they usually have a moral, are not heavy handed. The art is lovely and appears to be original to the vintage. This series introduces new characters without the rampant commercialism the is so apparent in the more recently written Thomas books. I've read all of these stories many, many times, and they still charm both myself and my son.

Original Thomas the Tank Engine Story book

My 2 1/2 year old Grandson adores Thomas and Friends and collects the engines. His favorite is Gordon so he is very happy to have a train book that is all about Gordon. He listened carefully to 2 stories this morning and is fascinated with this original version of the Railway Series by the Rev. W. Audry. It is a contrast with his other books that have been the newer versions of Thomas and Friends.

I love that this is the original oldy-timey version of the Thomas stories. My son loves the illustrations. The size is easy to handle. There are about 3-4 stories per book.

FIVE LECTURES THAT GIVE AN EXCELLENT OVERVIEW OF JUNG

This book contains five lectures (recorded nearly verbatim) that Jung gave in 1935 to the Institute of Medical Psychology in London. Each lecture concludes with questions and answers ("Discussions") from the 200 doctors who were present.

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"These collective patterns I have called archetypes, using an expression of St. Augustine's... From these layers derive the contents of an impersonal, mythological character, in other words, the archetypes, and I call them therefore the impersonal or collective unconscious." (Lect. 2)
"There is nothing mystical about the collective unconscious. It is just a new branch of science, and it is really commonsense to admit the existence of unconscious collective processes. For, though a child is not born conscious, his mind is not a tabula rasa." (Lect. 2)
"I must repeat again that my methods do not discover theories, they discover facts, and I tell you what facts I discover with these methods. I cannot discover a castration complex or a repressed incest or something like that---I find only psychological facts, not theories." (Disc. 2)
"Tao can be anything. I use another word to designate it, but it is poor enough. I call it synchronicity." (Disc. 2)

Best insight into Jung

This book was the most concise, easily understood insight into Jung's personality and theories. It doesn't read like a boring text, but is rather a series of speeches that contains face to face challenges to Jung's work by his colleagues. Within his answers it becomes easier to glean and simplify his vast body of work within the topics he discussed in the lectures. If you wanna understand Jung but have trouble understanding his concepts, this book lays it out nicely.

An HSP herself, Aron is also the reigning expert on the subject, and this workbook exists to make you a more helpful expert on yourself. So what is an HSP? Aron thinks one-fifth of humanity is born with more finely tuned perceptions than the rest. In primitive times, HSPs were the first to spot the lion lurking in the bush, the last to shoot the arrow--and the likeliest to hit the lion in one shot. Later, HSPs became the tempering priestly advisors to the more aggressive warrior kings. To be an HSP is a challenge and an opportunity, she argues. This book contains self-tests to determine whether you're an HSP, and if so, which kind: introverted, extroverted, sensation seeking, and other plausible categories. Some HSPs yearn for "earlids" to shut out sound, for instance. This book Changed My Life

I bought this book after seeing the movie, "Sensitives: The Untold Story! " Changing my entire life!

Things I have been attempting to change my entire life were just NORMAL attributes of an HSP!! I cannot thank Elaine enough for writing this book and for the documentary made with a Kick Start campaign! I took her test on line at her site... highly sensitive person test, and answered yes to all the questions! I cover up most lights on my computer, printer, router and such. I have no sounds except the error sound on my computer. Never could watch violent movies, sensitive to bright lights, strong smells, loud sounds. Can feel everyone when walking into a room. If you "think" you might be one, it could change your life reading this book! I think you only need to answer yes to about 14 of the many questions.

I totally understood why my parents treated me the way they did. I was overly sensitive to so many things and they did not know what to do about it! They did not know "why"! Same with friends and teachers and my sister!

I am a CHANGED person and I Highly Recommend this book to Everyone! Why? Because you might have a friend, partner, child who is highly sensitive and knowing how to treat them, can change both your relationships. It turns out not only are 15 - 20% of humans highly sensitive, so are animals and insects in the same percentages! It is a Natural Trait and not an illness or disease. Scientists can see it in brain scans and DNA testing. We have been misdiagnosed for decades as being shy, withdrawn, depressed and so on, which is not true. I love, love, loved this book!

This may be the best book I have read in years

This may be the best book I have read in years. Maybe a decade. I was a year and a half into a very stressful job with a bully boss when I found this book -- I'd heard about it for years but thought the title sounded girlie and wimpy so I hesitated to read it. I don't like gooey, emotional, sappy stuff. Well guess what... no sap here. Or at least so little sap that a person who doesn't like sappy didn't really notice. Instead I found a smart, astute, science-based book which explained to me why I was slowly dying at my job, why I could not sleep at night, and why I was so stressed at work that I literally could not stomach my sandwich at lunch but would almost throw it up every day (but I could eat at home) -- I was operating at a level of physical stress which was impossible for a highly sensitive person to sustain, and yet I was somehow sustaining it. (I am very stubborn.) Once I actually looked at myself, looked at my actual situation, stopped blaming myself for being "weak" and "broken" and "not tough enough" and stopped trying to be what I am not, I saw clearly that I was ignoring my physical body's symptoms of extreme stress and hurting myself bad. Reading this was a wake up call at a time in my life when I really needed it, and gave me enough confidence to finally stand up to my impossible to please, bullying, manipulative boss and just quit. I am going back to school and retraining to become a software developer so that I can work in an environment that won't kill me. Not everyone is the same; everyone has different physical tolerances. If you find yourself "too sensitive" etc, give yourself a break. You are not a clone of the extrovert next to you. Pay attention to your body and read this book. IF YOU ARE AN EXTROVERT, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. If you are NOT highly sensitive, please read this book!!! I wish to God every human being would read this book so people could finally start understanding each other, and society in general would stop hurting those among them who are not built with the same nervous system that the 80% majority of humanity has!!!! This has nothing to do with race boundaries, religion, nationality... this is all about pure genetics and how our species (in fact how over 100 species on this planet) function. It's ground breaking work.

MUST READ!!! If you have a traumatic experience that you're holding onto then it's time to read this book!

Wow… This book was INCREDIBLE!!!! I'm still trying to take in everything that is brought to the front of my mind that I never realized or even thought about until I read this book. I don't think this is just for sensitive people but for everyone. If anyone has dealt with any kind of trauma in their lives or as a child that causes you to be an internal person than I think this book is for you. It will help you start to realize that you keep yourself in a protective shell inside your body because that's where you feel most comfortable. This book will help you realize what you've done to allow yourself to stay there and not become the person that you truly were meant to be. It's time to start dealing with your past once and for all and move PAST it… Letting anything control who you are and what you do isn't good. There is more happiness in your life than you could ever imagine.. Again this is a MUST READ.

Great Narratives

This collects some of the greatest and most important slave narratives. It includes the first known slave narrative ever written by Olaudah Equiano (A.K.A. Gustavus Vassa). That was probably my favorite one out of all of them because it was very adventurous. It is also intriguing because it was the first narrative ever published from a Black person. All of these narratives are great, and you can really learn a lot about the history of slavery within the pages of this book.If you love reading black literature, you should definitely pick this book up.

A Must Read!!!

I'm so glad to have purchased this book!! I was a teenager during the Civil Rights Movement and there were little to no indepth stories or articles about the lives/experiences of my ancestors during the slave years. Oh sure, we heard or read about such notables as Harriet Tubman, the 'Moses' of the Underground Railroad, Frederick Douglas, andd George Washington Carver, and others, but this narrative gives the reader an insight into the lives of some of the obscure individuals, not mentioned in history books.

This book or others similar should be read in addition to the history books about the founding of the United States.

It is a nice compendium of the major primary sources (slave narratives) that are available. My major complaint is not content but that the binding is so crappy. It is tight and likely would break if you actually tried to hold the pages open.
