This should really be titled, "Why Learn?"

This should really be titled, "Why Learn?" as it is a testament to the need to develop minds for the continuation of American society. Sounds lofty but when you read the book, you'll understand that our society is really what's at stake. I am in the process of helping my son look for a university to continue his education -- problem is, all over the country I hear that the reason I should send my child to college is so that he may get a job afterward. One after another they gloat over their percentage of after college placement. I'm a realist, I don't want my son to starve, but I also want to know that the reason he's employable is that his education prepared him to think analytically, to write exquisitely, to delve into subject areas to which he's not been previously exposed -- to think! Now that would be something in which I'd be willing to invest!

The author has thoroughly reproduced his experience and knowledge in the book.I must say that this book is a must have for the beginners.Though some important notes like OAF and BI Publisher are missing,the author mentions that he will cover it in the second book.I really appreciate you (Andy Penver) especially since I had a very tough time to get a hold on Oracle R12 fundamentals from a developer's point of view.There are a lot of materials on the internet but most of them are unstructured and you have to google again and again to get to the correct point.This book has a lot of diagrams with proper explanations and steps to configure them.Once again a heartily thanks to Andy Penver.I will be eagerly waiting for your second book :D

I wish the tutorial section was more detailed. I also noticed some of the information was out of date. It covers at least Ruby 2.1, but some of the information given was out of date, such as how Ruby handles block parameter variables with the same name as a variable defined outside of the block (defined before the block).

A Ph D from IIT Bombay, Subrata Ghoshal is currently Professor in the Embedded System Design Department of IIIT, Pune. He has over 20 years of teaching experience at reputed institutes of higher education in India, including BITS (Pilani), STCET (Kolkata), and SMIT (Sikkim). He has authored two books and has to his credit several technical papers published in India and abroad. He has also served as Guest Editor of the Robotics issue of CSI Communications (November, 2008). His research interests include robotics, artificial intelligence, and embedded system design.

Best DIY on embedded systems

I am assuming you have some college degree and very fundamental knowledge on electronics.
If you want to become an embedded programming guru under a month, BUY THIS BOOK !!!

I am a mechanical engineer and have little to no experience in electronics. I have spent over 600 hundreds dollars buying books on embedded systems since I have limited knowledge on electronics. I needed a comprehensive DIY book with step by step guide to take me from beginner status to advance expert.

After many months of searching amazon & ebay, I stumbled upon this book. It had no reviews but I decided to try my luck.
This book was an angel sent from above. My co-workers wondered why I learnt so fast. (** I never told them the secret but it was this book)

Many of the books I bought on embedded systems; "Embedded Systems building blocks" - Jean Labrosse and "Embedded Systems Primer" - David Simon, were a bit advanced for me. You need some level of experience and expertise to leverage the benefits of the aforementioned books.
But Subrata Ghoshals book fills in the patches and transforms you from an Idiot to an embedded system expert.

A piece of advise to any one that reads my review:
Ghoshals book has hands on projects from hardware planning and design to software development. Each Chapter has a distinct project and increases in sophistication as you go deeper into the book. So my advice is, take a note of all the parts you need from each chapter and purchase them all at once. That will increase your speed of learning substantially and after 30 days, you'll definitely come thank me for this review !

Excelent book for a Newbie!

For a Newbie on PIC C programming like me, this is really an excellent book. It teaches C language programming, helping the reader to create an entire program (step-by-step). Also, the reader can understand the PIC architecture and learn how use a C compiler (like CCS C). Finally, the reader can learn and try to implement a complete project using microcontrollers. I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking to make a travel through the field of microcontrollers and embedded programming.

Not quite what I had hoped

I had high expectations for this book and unfortunately it didn't deliver like I had hoped. I was trying to learn how to program PICs in C and this book starts its tutorials with the classic printf("Hello World"); example. This isn't useful for an embedded design since my PIC doesn't have a printer or monitor attached to it yet, so I read the rest of the book and did the exercises in text without actually doing any programming. The final chapter assumes that you have C programming down by that point so it is dedicated to the fundamentals of how to organize a project, which is a huge system design of an electronic scooter using the CAN bus. Overall this whole chapter/project wasn't all that useful or interesting to me, so I skipped it. Though I read all of the text and did the exercises, at the end of the day, I still couldn't program my PIC in C. I had a decent understanding of syntax and such when I got done, but it wasn't until I read Martin P. Bates book Programming 8-bit PIC Microcontrollers in C: with Interactive Hardware Simulation that I was able to actually get anything written in C to load into my processor.

That said, this book does what it says it does and addresses C programming for the PICs and not a computer. I have found it useful for giving more in depth explanations of what is in the CCS users guide.

I am giving this book 3 stars because it is quite expensive and has turned out to essentially just be a supplement to the CCS documentation, which is already really good, so I doubt that I will be using this book that much.
