Engaging, real-life math skills!

When I paged through this book at the library, it was hard to tell what it was about. I'm so glad I brought it home and read it to my nine-year-old son. It has an engaging story (how to best count mall shoppers entering from four different entrances) and clearly teaches math-adding strategies (like various ways to add a group like 8, 7, 9 and 8 quickly in your head). He was completely enthused with it, and I'm figuring out how to best procure the rest of the series. The funny thing about math is that it is a skill that we need and use in adult life, but it is taught in such a needlessly obscure way in school. With the way many kids learn, it needs to be connected to realistic circumstances for the information to be retained, and this book does that. We also love the Life of Fred series.
