Get a new editor!
By K. Reiman
Although the book does contain good information, it is presented in an extremely repetitive manner. Things are restated two or even three times over. Also, this is the most poorly edited book I have ever read. I find it rather pathetic that a college textbook should have such an abundance of spelling and grammar errors that should have been caught before putting this book into production.

Class Text Purchase
By Outlinednchalk
Purchased book as a required read for a college course. Easy to read and includes many side boxes as examples to the concepts being discussed. Gave four stars because sometimes it went on and on about one concept and skimmed through others that seemed more important to my professor. Overall, good textbook.

From Publishers Weekly
The Mystery Writers of America presents an all-original anthology sure to appeal to Twilight fans with an interest in crime. While vampires are well represented among the 20 selections, most notably Parnell Hall's darkly humorous Death of a Vampire, bestseller Harris ensures that werewolves, ghosts, and magicians also get their due. Harley Jane Kozak does a superb job of integrating a ghost into a contemporary setting in Madeeda, in which an expectant mother is concerned over her two-year-old twins' visions of a bad witch. A phantom ship figures in Lou Kemp's In Memory of the Sibylline, a highly effective horror story set in the 19th century. Even Mike Hammer gets into X-Files mode in Max Allan Collins's and Mickey Spillane's Grave Matter, which successfully introduces a supernatural element into the case of a series of mysterious deaths in the ironically named town of Hopeful, N.Y. Other contributors include William Kent Krueger, Margaret Maron, and Carolyn Hart. (Apr.)

Excellent collection of paranormal mysteries
By CJ-MO
The names Margaret Maron and Max Allan Collins on the cover of "Crimes by Moonlight" caught my eye. After discovering that this was a collection of 20 "Mysteries from the Dark Side", I was hooked. After reading each story, I can say the collection lived up to its promise. This is an excellent and varied collection of short stories by a mixture of well-known and lesser known authors.

I hadn't read anything by the editor of the collection, Charlaine Harris, prior to this. However, I loved her story about vampire Dahlia Lynley-Chivers. It was full of both adventure and humor, and I would love to read more stories about this character. Other great vampire stories in this collection are Parnell Hall's "Death of a Vampire" and Toni L.P. Kelner's "Taking the Long View". Not all of the stories were related to vampires. For example, Elaine Viets' story of second sight was suspenseful, but still included her wonderful sense of humor. I enjoyed the ghost stories by Barbara D'Amato, Mike Wiecek, and Carolyn Hart. I also liked Dana Cameron's story, which started out like a traditional mystery - until a werewolf came along! I enjoyed the collaboration of Max Allan Collins and Mickey Spillane in an unusual Mike Hammer story. There is quite a mixture of different types of stories and settings, so the collection really does have something for everyone.

I have read many collections that have only a couple of good stories, but "Crimes by Moonlight" contains one great story after the other. Fans of vampire and other paranormal stories will love this collection. In addition, those that like the work of contributing authors such as Harley Jane Kozak, Elaine Viets, and Margaret Maron, who aren't usually known for paranormal stories, will love seeing another side of these authors.

A little bit of info.
By M. MacDonald
I bought this book for Charlaine Harris's story but decided to read them all and try to write something about each one. These stories are all so short it's hard to give a synopsis without giving away too much or ruining the ending. I tried to be as careful as I could not to ruin the "punch line", because of this in most of the stories I couldn't even tell you what kind of supernatural is even in them. All the stories have something paranormal in it. (vamp, shifter, ghost,...) Unfortunately I think the stories are just too short to truly give you a taste of a new author. I personally prefer anths that have 3 or 4 stories in them instead.

(Stories are listed in the books order)

1) Dahlia Underground - Charlaine Harris - vamp - Story should be read RIGHT after Harris's Southern Vampire Bk7 "All together Dead". Dahlia Lynley-Chivers wakes up buried in the pyramid rubble (see/read A.T.D.) This story contain the local vamp's reaction/retaliation to the explotion. It may be short but it's a nice little addition to the Sookie series plus I like Dahlia and want to read more of her. At this point this is the third short with her in it plus she make a cameo appearance in A.T.D. (also in Tacky, Bacon) This story should be an epilog at the end of A.T.D.

2) Hixton - William Kent Krueger - Reporter D'Angelo tracks down an old retired cop to hear the true story about 5 missing boys and gets more than he expected - this one is a type of remake of a common children's story, can't tell you which one or I ruin the ending. - not to my "taste" (you'll get my joke after you read it)

3) Small Change - Margaret Maron - shifter - Laurel (13yr old) set out in an unusual way to catch the thief of her dad's antique store - kind of cute little story I would be interested in giving one of her longer stories a try

4) The Trespassers - Brendan Dubois - Police Chief Hoyt Graham is called in the middle of the night to a local famous house to find 1 half of a 2 man TV ghost hunting team dead - not great but worth a little time if you get this book.

5) Madeeda - Harley Jane Kozak - Jane England, a pregnant mother and her twin son's get messages from a purple and green witch - this one is very weird and hard to describe.

6) House of Horrors - S.W. Hubbard - The Harrigan family spend the day at the Jersey Shore bonding with their new adopted 9yr. old daughter and a teen boy goes missing in the House of Horrors. - didn't care for this one at all

7) Sift, Almost Invisible, Through - Jeffrey Somers - a man gives a series of photos of himself taken over a year's time all featuring the same mystery man in the background to PI Philip K. Marks. Who or what is this man?

8) The Bedroom Door - Elaine Viets - Leila is warned by her "cursed" grandmother that her business partner will die in 3 days.

9) The Conqueror Worm - Barbara D'Amato - Neal Hofstra received e-mails from an old friend ... a dead friend

10) In Memory of the Sibylline - Lou Kemp - The events aboard a ship in the 1800's and its mysterious guest- an interesting story, might be worth a look at others by this author, maybe.

11) The Bloodflower - Martin Meyers - how having the right/wrong apartment can change 1 women's life forever- didn't care for this story.

12) The Awareness - Terrie Farley Moran - a banshee investigates the murder of one of her charges - has some interesting possibilities for a book or series here.

13) Tadesville - Jack Fredrickson - the life of a banjo player on the road, it never pays to be greedy - I'll take a pass on this one

14) Limbo - Steve Brewer - Mercer wakes up dead on an otopsy table and sets off to find his killer

15) The Insider - Mike Wiecek - Detective Clark is asked to investigate a ghost giving stock tips. Is it legal or insider trading?

16) Swing Shift - Dana Cameron - Jake Steuben is called in by his FBI friend to go undercover to find the source of a governmental leak to the Nazis. - a little interesting, shows some promise for a series/book.

17) Riding High - Carolyn Hart - Bailey Ruth Raeburn a ghost/emissary from Heaven kills time after completing her mission.

18) Grave Matter - Max Allan Collins and Mickey Spillane - Mike Hammer a WW2 vet gets news an old war buddy is dead, he goes to investigate since no one else will, not even the police.

19) Death of a Vampire - Parnell Hall - goth college student hires P.I. Stanley Hastings to first find out if her boyfriend really is a vampire, then find him after he goes missing - not to bad of a story

20) Taking the Long View - Toni L.P. Kelner - vampire couple Mark and Stella go to a vampire birthday party were another vamp ends up dead. Who is the killer? - cute, has possibilities for more.

As I have NOT read anything by most of these authors and they are sooo short I can't really comment much. (Think a chapter length per story.) Several of them I suspect are like Harris's story and part of a series that would make the short better/fill in the blanks. I had to struggle to get myself to finish this book because I didn't like the majority of it. I still wish they had cut out most of them and giving us longer shorts so we could get a better idea if it is worth checking out any of the other authors or not. Even the stories I think hold promise I don't know if I well ever bother to look for more or not with such a small taste. I've read enough books that had the idea for a great story but no ability to complete it.

All in all I would only recommend this book to someone that is getting it because one of the stories are part of a series they already have and only if you "really" want to read the short. I would not recommend it to a new reader. If you are looking at this book as an anthology to find a new author try a different one with fewer stories. If you want it for Harris's story like I did and have the patience wait and see if she comes out with another book like "A Touch of Dead" that groups her shorts into one book. I didn't have the patience myself. :( But my guess is she will.

strong paranormal mysteries anthology
By A Customer
These twenty short stories focus on paranormal mysteries that run the urban fantasy gamut with vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, seers, mages and Mike Hammer making featured appearances. All of the contributions by The Mystery Writers of America authors are enjoyable tales that sub-genre fans will want to read as the diversity of the supernatural adds to the overall fun. Vampires are right at home in Parnell Hall's amusing "Death of a Vampire" and Charlaine Harris's "Dahlia Underground". Ghosts star in Harley Jane Kozak's "Madeeda", Carolyn Hart's "Riding High" as a marriage counselor and even as a phantom ship in Lou Kemp's "In Memory of the Sibylline". Finally Hammer has a "Grave Matter" (by Max Allan Collins and Mickey Spillane) case with a supernatural taint. This is a strong anthology as everyone contributing showed up in top form providing enjoyable Crimes by Moonlight: Mysteries from the Dark Side collection.

'... students will find the contents of this book to be a very helpful guide ... Because of its wide coverage and careful presentation the book should be useful for a diverse group of students in many countries and interested in a variety of areas of applications.' C. W. J. Granger, Nobel Laureate 'Most econometric texts can be described as either primarily theoretical or primarily applied. This is the first text I've seen that does a really nice job of bridging the gap between the two in a single unified whole... I can strongly recommend this book to anyone desiring a firm understanding of both where econometric methods come from and how they are used in practice.' James D. Hamilton, University of California, San Diego '... superbly presented, the coverage is thorough, the technical rigour is sensibly balanced, and the empirical examples demonstrate the techniques effectively. The exercises are stimulating, the answers are insightful, and the exposition in the background material is excellent. It will appeal very strongly to researchers, instructors and students' Michael McAleer, University of Western Australia '... a thorough introduction to the basic principles of econometrics ... The strong link between theory and applications provides great motivation for studying econometrics.' Helmut Lutkepohl, European University Institute, Florence '... meticulously crafted to give an almost seamless transition between learning and doing econometrics ... There is something here for all students of econometrics.' Michael P. Clements, Warwick University

Comprehensive, Rigorous and Practical
By John Satish Sharma
The book by Heij, et al combines a nice blend of rigour, practicality and comprehensiveness. The range of topics discussed progresses from elementary methods to quite sophisticated time series methods such as vector autoregressions, conditional volatility, etc.

Unlike some other titles which are either too technical or 'dumbed down' to make this appeal to a mass market, this edition nicely combines both technical soundness and real world applications. A word of warning though: the contents in this book are for people committed to learning econometrics properly, and is nota leisurely bed-time reading title.

Covers content, but...
By Isaac T. Knowles
I purchased this for my first year econometrics class. It covers the necessary content, and the mathematics is appropriate for econ grad students. However, I find it to be poorly formatted. I would prefer a more didactic presentation of proofs, but here a lot of important expressions and equations are tucked away in the text, rather than given their own line. In general, I find the presented proofs and lines of reason to be somewhat difficult to follow.

Another big problem is its use of examples. Throughout the book, the authors make ample use of examples to illustrate concepts. The further you read, however, the more the authors make references to previous examples rather than repeating the information they feel is vital to understand the current example. Moreover, examples refer to examples refer to examples, etc.. This might be useful when you read the book through for class, but it will make it a terrible reference tool later on. I am currently considering a different text, such as Hayashi or Greene. Consider purchasing a more mainstream and well-considered econometrics text for your bookshelf, and go in with your classmates to purchase a single copy of Heij if you need to do problem sets out of it for class.

Wishful Drinking, by Carrie Fisher

Finally, after four hit novels, Carrie Fisher comes clean (well, sort of ) with the crazy truth that is her life in her first-ever memoir.

In Wishful Drinking, adapted from her one-woman stage show, Fisher reveals what it was really like to grow up a product of "Hollywood in-breeding," come of age on the set of a little movie called Star Wars, and become a cultural icon and bestselling action figure at the age of nineteen.

Intimate, hilarious, and sobering, Wishful Drinking is Fisher, looking at her life as she best remembers it (what do you expect after electroshock therapy?). It's an incredible tale: the child of Hollywood royalty -- Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher -- homewrecked by Elizabeth Taylor, marrying (then divorcing, then dating) Paul Simon, having her likeness merchandized on everything from Princess Leia shampoo to PEZ dispensers, learning the father of her daughter forgot to tell her he was gay, and ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed.

Wishful Drinking, the show, has been a runaway success. Entertainment Weekly declared it "drolly hysterical" and the Los Angeles Times called it a "Beverly Hills yard sale of juicy anecdotes." This is Carrie Fisher at her best -- revealing her worst. She tells her true and outrageous story of her bizarre reality with her inimitable wit, unabashed self-deprecation, and buoyant, infectious humor.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Fisher has fictionalized her life in several novels (notably Postcards from the Edge), but her first memoir (she calls it a really, really detailed personals ad) proves that truth is stranger than fiction. There are more juicy confessions and outrageously funny observations packed in these honest pages than most celebrity bios twice the length. After describing how she underwent electroshock therapy for her manic depression, Fisher then sorts through her life as her memories return. She predicts that by the end of the book, you'll feel so close to me that you'll want to divorce me. At one point, this daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher (one an icon, the other an arm piece to icons) hilariously diagrams her family tree of Hollywood marriages and remarriages to make sure her daughter's potential date is not a relative. Revealing that at 15 she got a vibrator for Christmas from her mother, she writes, You might be thinking that a lot of the stories I'm telling you are over the top... but you can't imagine what I'm leaving out. With acerbic precision and brash humor, she writes of struggling with and enjoying aspects of her alcoholism, drug addiction and mental breakdowns. Her razor-sharp observations about celebrity, addiction and sexuality demand to be read aloud to friends. (Dec.)

Review
"[Fisher] has a talent for lacerating insight that masquerades as carefree self-deprecation...The effect, ultimately, is extraordinarily painful while being extremely entertaining...[S]he's done her best to make sense of it all, and throughout, her humor has held up. In her own defiant manner, she's fought the good fight." -- The Los Angeles Times

"She's still funny as hell...Her stories bubble, bounce, and careen with an energy...Get someone to read this rollicking book aloud to you." -- Entertainment Weekly

"Fisher makes each crushing tragedy hilarious." -- People (4 out of 4 stars)

"[T]here are also sparkling bons mots bespeaking [Carrie's] quirky intelligence and sweetness. Spoken like a true princess." -- Elle

"Clearly, you should buy this book....she has expert comic timing and, perhaps more importantly, better stories than most drug addicts....Fisher is unafraid to write, brutally and vividly." -- New York Post

"Fisher, unlike most celebrities (especially ones spawned from other celebrities) can actually write, and...Wishful Drinking, though an extremely short book, is super salacious and entertaining." -- Jezebel.com

"Fisher is a language obsessive, a nimble verbal acrobat who puns and somersaults around a page with glee...If you are a fan of Fisher's fiction, a follower of her mental illness or simply a looky-loo stargazer curious about her Hollywood heritage, Wishful Drinking will likely make you laugh." -- Slate.com

"There are more juicy confessions and outrageously funny observations packed in these honest pages than most celebrity bios twice the length...With acerbic precisions and brash humor, she writes of struggling with and enjoying aspects of her alcoholism, drug addiction and mental breakdowns. Her razor-sharp observations about celebrity, addiction and sexuality demand to be read aloud to friends." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Give it a chance
By Whistlers Mom
This author is an alcoholic and I am a bookaholic. When I start reading a book, I compulsively continue it, even if it's God-awful and I hate it. This unfortunate quirk has caused me many a boring hour, but in this case I owe it a debt of gratitude.

Which is a way of saying that the giddy, girly style of writing in the first chapter almost drove me insane. Nothing but my reluctance to abandon a book kept me going. But then a miracle happened and the writing (while informal and still WAY too full of whimsy) settled down. By the second chapter, I was glued to Fisher's weird family diagram (parents, sibling, spouses, step-parents, half-siblings, step-siblings, actresses, actors, singers, agents, artists, beauty queens, and a respected Chinese-American author) and laughing hysterically. Welcome to Hollywood.

This is not a book you read to find out "what happened." Unless you've been living in a cave, you know all about Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher and Carrie Fisher and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and Cary Grant and Paul Simon. Their lives may not have been any more troubled or eventful than many private citizens, but they were lived in full view of the public. Old style Hollywood with its carefully groomed stars and jealously guarded publicity may be a thing of the past, but the celebrity machine is still cranking away even more furiously than when Eddie Fisher caused an international scandal by dumping his wholesome wife and marrying Liz Taylor (who soon dumped HIM and married Richard Burton.) Who cares? A lot of people, judging from the ink that was wasted on reporting every detail.

Fisher herself grew up the daughter of two celebrities and became one herself at the tender age of 19 when she played Princess Leia in the Star Wars series. She married a famous singer and then an agent, had a daughter, wrote books, and performed one-woman shows. She also abused drugs and alcohol, attended AA meetings, was in and out of mental hospitals, was diagnosed as bi-polar, and underwent electroshock therapy. You could say she's lived a "full life."

I'm disinterested in the entertainment industry and in celebrities in general, and yet Fisher is an appealing woman. She comes across as brutally honest, especially about her own problems and mistakes. You get the impression of someone who has been through so much craziness that she has both developed an inner toughness and been stripped of the need to hide her defects and weaknesses.

I read this book or a version of it years ago and remembered being impressed. I was happy to find the Kindle version and enjoyed re-reading it. I think it's a valuable story. No, most of us didn't grow up in Beverly Hills, but most of our lives have been touched by addiction and mental illness. In the end, this isn't a story of a celebrity. It's a story of a woman and how she's dealt with her problems.

I was too sad to go to bed so I bought this book ...
By DDK
I bought this book the day after Carrie's death, about an hour after I learned of her mother's death. I was too sad to go to bed so I bought this book instead. And read it straight through.

I'm glad I did.

"Postcards from the Edge" was my only prior impression of the relationship these two women had. This memoir paints a very different picture. I am sorry the world has lost these two brilliant and beautiful souls, but I am glad for them both that they still have each other.

Upbeat Hollywood tale of survival, light on suffering, long on humor
By Amazon Customer
Not a life-changing memoir but a life-affirming one, with a sharp, honest recounting of actress/author Carrie Fisher's life. In turns funny and bawdy, she never asks for pity, but goes at it like a true recovered addict: all her pain digested into humor, but never denied. I suffer from similar issues and found her believable and illuminating and empowering. There is nothing poetic or soaring about this book, just a fellow journeyman telling their bittersweet tale of survival. And that is more than enough.

a must-read if you like books about mountain men
By Thomas Klein
The Shining Mountains is a great historical novel that picks up where Amrose's Undaunted Courage leaves off: the opening of the American West after Lewis&Clark. It is a very entertaining book about human strengths and weaknesses, clashes of native american and euro-american cultures, and about true love and ultimate friendship. Even though this book was written in 1948, it has an openness to it that defies the moral norms of the times in which it was written. Van Everly takes some historic liberties, for example making the fictional hero of Matt Morgan the discoverer of South Pass in 1806, when this wagon route to the west was found by Jedediah Smith and others like him not until the 1820's. This does not detract, however, from the compelling storyline of a man pulled between the lure of the Rockies' wilderness and the home and hearth of his true love. As the story develops, Every weaves in encounters with the likes of Lewis & Clark, his brother, the general Roger Clark, expedition hands Colter and Drouillard, and Manuel Lisa who built a fortune on the backs of beavers (literally) and their trappers, to name a few.

Young man goes west to trade with the Indians in the early 1800s...
By book lover
I'm reading the paperback edition of this book. It has 310 pages and I've read the first 80 as of this writing. I would rate this book so far 3.5 stars. It's reminiscent of The Big Sky by A B Guthrie in that it has a young man heading west to enter the fur trade and trade with the Indians, except this book takes place at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition and Guthrie's book takes place in the 1830s. I like the story and it has been anything but predictable so far. However, the dialogue does not really convey the times as much as some other authors managed to do, such as Guthrie and a little known author by the name of Jess Shelton. My main complaint is that the author has occasionally mixed up his story (at least that's what it looks like to me). Here are four instances I have come across so far:

p. 68
“She [Nora] wanted practical security for her children, among whom she counted Lydia the dearest, because she was the one most in need of protection.”

--> This is confusing because Nora was Lydia’s daughter, not mother. I think the author messed up here. On page 13 the author writes that their relationship was more like that of sisters, with Nora the older one. Still, that’s sisters, not mother/daughter.

p. 69
“All was different with Lydia’s arrival [birth]. She came into an atmosphere of peace and hope. For her there was awaiting a home.”

--> This sentence contains an error in names. It should read: “All was different with Linda’s arrival….” Linda was the new born baby and Lydia was the mother.

p. 73
Lydia says to Nora in conversation (bottom of page) that she has never seen Matt. But Matt saved the Austin family earlier in the book from Shawnee Indians (chapters 1 - 3) and Lydia would have seen him then.

p. 88
In conversation with Nora (top of page), Matt refers to Frank and Luther as her children. They are her brothers (see pp. 15-16).

December 13, 2015
Finished the book today. Final rating: 3.5 stars. Overall a pretty good story of a young man whose dream it was to see the "Shining Mountains." Some of the writing (usually related to the romantic dialogue) was a bit too sappy for my taste (I just have a hard time believing people talk like that ... now or then). What really saves the book is the unexpected twists and turns in the narrative. Also, while I had an idea of the ending, I didn't see some of the other details related to it that were quite unexpected and keep the ending from being picture perfect. In fact, I wondered if the author should have gone a step farther at the end ... reader's will probably know what I mean.
