In the 9th Edition of Metals Handbook, the title of this Volume was Surface Cleaning, Finishing, and Coating; for the new ASM Handbook edition, the title has been changed to Surface Engineering. A useful working definition of the term surface engineering is "treatment of the surface and near-surface regions of a material to allow the surface to perform functions that are distinct from those functions demanded from the bulk of the material." These surface-specific functions include protecting the bulk material from hostile environments, providing low- or high-friction contacts with other materials, serving as electronic circuit elements, and providing a particular desired appearance.

Although the surface normally cannot be made totally independent from the bulk, the demands on surface and bulk properties are often quite different. For example, in the case of a turbine blade for a high-performance jet engine, the bulk of the material must have sufficient creep resistance and fatigue strength at the service temperature to provide an acceptably safe service life. The surface of the material, on the other hand, must possess sufficient resistance to oxidation and hot corrosion under the conditions of service to achieve that same component life. In many instances, it is either more economical or absolutely necessary to select a material with the required bulk properties and specifically engineer the surface to create the required interface with the environment, rather than to find one material that has both the bulk and surface properties required to do the job. It is the purpose of this Volume to guide engineers and scientists in the selection and application of surface treatments that address a wide range of requirements.

Scope of Coverage. This Volume describes surface modifications for applications such as structural components, in which the bulk material properties are the primary consideration and the surface properties must be modified for aesthetics, oxidation resistance, hardness, or other considerations. It also provides some limited information on surface modifications for applications such as microelectronic components, in which the near-surface properties are paramount and the bulk serves mainly as a substrate for the surface material.

The techniques covered may be divided broadly into three categories:
Techniques to prepare a surface for subsequent treatment (e.g., cleaning and descaling)
Techniques to cover a surface with a material of different composition or structure (e.g., plating, painting, and coating)
Techniques to modify an existing surface topographically, chemically, or microstructurally to enhance its properties (e.g., glazing, abrasive finishing, and ion implantation) --ASM International

Improving the performance, extending the life, and enhancing the appearance of materials used for engineering components are fundamental--and increasingly important--concerns of ASM members. As the performance demands placed on materials in engineering applications have increased, the importance of surface engineering (cleaning, finishing, and coating) technologies have increased along with them.

Evidence of the growing interest in (and complexity of) surface engineering processes can be found in the expansion of their coverage in ASM handbooks through the years. The classic 1948 Edition of Metals Handbook featured a total of 39 pages in three separate sections on surface treating and coating. In the 8th Edition, surface technologies shared a volume with heat treating, and the number of pages jumped to over 350. The 9th Edition of Metals Handbook saw even further expansion, with a separate 715-page volume devoted to cleaning, finishing, and coating.

Surface Engineering, the completely revised and expanded Volume 5 of ASM Handbook, builds on the proud history of its predecessors, and it also reflects the latest technological advancements and issues. Break out the skillet!

Good selection, easy to follow, recipies I've tried have turned out well. The authors did a good job of putting it together. I think I'll get a wire binding put on it because it's hard to keep open while trying to follow the directions.

Long Division contains two interwoven stories. Simply Amazing

I bought this book on the strength of having read Laymon's writing on and off for years on his blog and his work at Gawker. I knew he was an amazing writer. But even so, Long Division absolutely blew me away.

It's too bad that describing a great book often involves plot points, because the shock of discovery is part of what makes this novel so just incredibly fun to read. So, and since part of what the story is about is the beauty and power of a well-crafted sentence, I'll just offer a couple of examples of the latter:

"It made me kind of mad that the museum was named after a grimy drunk dude who called a girl 'baby,' but I figured lots of museum were named for part-time losers."

"Embarrassed, I understood on that stage, was just another way of saying I felt alone."

"F*** a book. Ain't no one reading no books in 2013 unless you already a star or talking about some damn vampires and wolfmen."

(I've bowdlerized that last quote lest Amazon remove it for violating some rule about appropriate language in reviews or something; Laymon isn't such a prude, and his characters speak like real people.)

There is so much going on in this novel. It's funny and it will make you cry, it's a page-turner that will make you want to read it as slowly as possible just to savor it, it'specific and regional but also makes a legitimate claim to be a Great American Novel, it does metafiction and scifi, it's wise and honest, and I guarantee you'll want to read it more than once.

Unlike anything I have ever read

I won this book early in the goodreads giveaway. I still do not know what to say. I read Kiese's essays but nothing could have prepared me for this book. The writing is pitchperfect. I have never seen any young writer do what he is doing here. I'm sure it's not for everyone but once you figure out what he is doing with time and authorship, I think you will agree that this book could be the modern classic a number of us readers of African American fiction have been waiting for. This is the first novel that I have finished and looked forward to giving to my daughter.

Long Division, Long Answers

I enjoyed the writing in Long Division and the humorous way in which the author turns a phrase. The writing is in the spirit of Paul Beatty and Victor Lavalle. If you are a fan of these authors, you will love this book. The protagonist is City, short for Citoyen. He is a young boy growing up in Mississippi. There is a lot of energy in the novel, and brief rifts on various subjects, mainly race and location. And not just location geographically speaking, but also time-period wise.

This is where I think the novel weakens. The book within a book thing can be a useful maneuver, but to take you through different eras in this artifice, the novel took a turn towards the simple and silly, rather than humorous and sensible. Cleverness becomes folly, intelligence becomes dumbness, and what could have been an absolute great novel becomes just average.

City is able to travel through time from 2013 to 1985 and 1964. This is all done through a door in the woods near his grandmother's home in Melahatchie, MS. He isn't actually doing the time travel, but is reading about it, in a book called "Long Division." In that book, he finds a character who narrates the publication and has the same name as him, City.

The publication is given to City, by a school official and their is no author of this book. As he begins to read the unauthored "Long Division" he recognizes names including his own, and one of his fellow peers who is currently missing. How does this all fit into what City is going through presently? Definitely some interesting moments. The novel by Mr. Laymon takes you on a sometimes exciting ride, but oftentimes an incongruous one. I would go 3.5 stars because I think the writing is mostly smart, humorous and engaging. But, since that is not an option, I must fall back to 3.

Most recommended book to clients

I have recommended this book to most of my female clients over the past 15 years. It has been extremely helpful as a daily reminder around learning to and staying out of the business of others, allowing others to make choices and handle the consequences. Yes, it is written with the 12 Step Program in mind, but that doesn't get in the way of the truth of each page. A reader doesn't need to be involved in 12 Step to get the wonderful benefits.

Great book. Highly recommend. I had this in paperback, and had already read it once, and later bought another copy on Kindle so I can take it with me everywhere. I read some every day. It is set up with the short meditations meant to be read on a particular day, so the book is laid out with each meditation having a date, starting with January 1st. Excellent, inspiring, meaningful and helpful. Helps in all aspects of life and relating to others.

UTTER BRILLIANCE A MUST READ

This book gripped me aftre the fist 6 pages , iam happy that i kepted going as all the caricters and the relationship between them are so real and funny , you will not stop laughting and tear will run down you face as you get more into reading the book .
For a first book by this author, was one of the best books ive read for a long time i hope he writes more about the lads and what they get up too as i can see a tv series or a movie being made because you will die laughting and want much more

There is so many moments i would love to tell you about this book but cant so you will have to by the book and have the same tears of laughter and sore stomach that i had you will not be disapointed

Mc cammond's poetic mind opens this book and sparkles throughout while sensibilities are blasted by the sharp and expletive wit of authentic Glasgow. Some will role with laughter; others will shudder at Mc Cammond's depiction of the nineties in the raw. The dialogue is fast paced, but every now and again it all slows to lyrical heartfelt reflection. This is a unique, honest and courageous book from a wildly creative talent. Hope to see more of Mc Cammond writing.

A really well written book full of Glasgow banter and many a laugh out loud moment. Lovely poetic moments scattered throughout add another dimension to the read… Enjoyed the stories and all the nonsense that surrounded the 2 main characters during a non stop week of drinking, joking, drinking and more joking and drinking…Look forward to the next book

Professor Paulinetti, was superior to every man in the hand balancing game. He originated many of the tricks including the truly unbelievable one-arm planche. Not only could he stand on one hand better then most people could on one leg, but he was as good at teaching others as performing.
Robert Jones was one of Paulinetti’s most promising pupils. His most legendary skill was the thumbs balance on the tips of Indian clubs. This and other feats made him famous and he was featured in Ripley’s Believe It Or Not nine times.
Between the two of them there was 70+ years of practicing and teaching hand balancing and gymnastics. Back in the 1940’s they wrote THE book on this art. The cover is about as good as it gets

I've been studying acrobatics and performing for years, this was in effect REALLY poorly done
-Bad old grainy photos
-A great historical account, awful instructional guide
-Vague instructions

Flawless, Essential, and Inspiring

I received this book as a gift, after getting a bit interested in hand balancing. It is without a doubt the best source of information on hand balancing I've ever seen! You really learn everything from the basics to the most advanced. You could use this book for years and years. This book has inspired me to become an avid hand balancer. I love it! I found the characters of Professor Paulinetti and Bob Jones so fascinating that I decided to dig up any information I could find on them. There's really not a lot, for such incredible people. It makes the subject of their lives even more fascinating somehow. Definitely would recommend this to someone interested in being able to do a handstand.

This is a really old book. A REALLY old book. Gymnastics and handstands have changed much since the time of Paulinetti. I'm not so sure if this was worth the price. He certainly made his feats look very simple. Keep in mind that Paulinetti had been tumbling and practicing handstands for a very long time - since childhood. I bought this book hoping for a method for which to progress in my own handstands and balancing. It did little to help me out. The first half of the book is the history of someone world-famous. It's fun. It's interesting. But I don't know how applicable it is to the general public.
